About the Author
Professsor Felix Sharipov graduated from the Moscow University of Physics and Technology, Faculty of Aerophysics and Space Research, and the Ural State Technical University. Since 1988 he is active in rarefied gas dynamics, since 1992 at the Federal University of Parana in Brazil. His research interests are numerical methods of rarefied gas dynamics applied to microfluidics, vacuum technology and aerothermodynamics. His group develops both probabilistic and deterministic approaches. Prof. Sharipov was organizer of numerous vacuum gas dynamics meetings, and published over a hundred journal articles, conference papers, and book chapters. He is a member of editorial board of international journal ?Vacuum?

Great Technical Book

This book is a very useful addition to my engineering library. The mathematics of low-density gas flows is carefully developed without being obnoxiously dense. My favorite feature of this book is the successful balance that is provided between theoretical development (equation derivations) and practical applications including (1) numerical simulation results and (2) numerous tables of engineering values useful in practice. Thankfully there is an extensive table of symbols used throughout the book so that the reader does not have to constantly search for the meanings of variables in the equations. There is a good description of DSMC simulations, as well as informative discussions about gas/surface interactions (including an excellent section on accommodation coefficients), velocity slip, acoustics, and transport coefficients. These are followed by extensive presentations of 1-d and 2-d flows (planar and axisymmetric), for example free molecular orifice flow. There is unfortunately no discussion of vacuum plumes. However, the crowning achievement of this book is the remarkably extensive set of references that is thoughtfully presented throughout the text, facilitating deeper investigations by the reader where necessary.
