Wonderful Titanic Book

April marks the 100th anniversary of the sinking of the Titanic, and I am fully expecting a wide variety of materials to come out about the subject. This makes me extremely happy because I am obsessed with the Titanic. I also expect a large number of the materials to be below par, people jumping on the bandwagon and doing whatever they can to make a few bucks. With this book, I had very high hopes. Thank goodness I wasn't disappointed.

Told in verse from the perspective of 24 different characters, this book covers all of the bases. There are people who survive because of class, gender or age. There are people that don't survive because of class, gender, or age. There are people that basically save themselves. Then there is the iceberg and even a rat. The idea behind these last two characters was a cute idea at first, but I didn't care for them after the first few sections. Also there are parts where an undertaker tells of collecting the bodies afterward, and that part was probably the most interesting to me. Many characters' stories were entertwined throughout the book, and this was done in a very fluid way. I was impressed with how the author tied so many of them together.

The majority of the book leads up to the crash. I fully enjoyed all of it, but I could see people who aren't die hard Titanic fans thinking it a slow start. The closer it got to time to hit the iceberg, the faster I tore through the book. Since it is in verse, it reads quickly. I am not always a fan of verse. Most of this book read like any other book, but a few parts were written in a rhyming type. For a lot of those sections I was spending more time trying to find the pattern in the rhymes than actually paying attention to what I was reading. The end of the book has a history section which is full of very interesting information. Overall this book is not perfect, but it is very captivating and the most interesting way I have seen the story of the Titanic told.

Review of The Watch that Ends the Night

Told from 24 different perspectives in multiple genres such as verse, letters, undertaker's notes, telegrams, forms and booklets, this harrowing tale takes the reader through the journey that different people took on the Titanic. The points of view range from workers like lookouts and stokers, 3rd class passengers like an immigrant and refugee, 2nd class passengers like a tailor, 1st class passengers like a millionaire and socialite as well as the captain, ship builder, the business man, the ship rat and the iceberg. The story begins on April 1st, 1912 with preparing to sail and ends with the survivors aboard the Carpathia on April 18, 1912.

This novel obviously takes the reader through the complete tragedy of the RMS Titanic and the amount of research that Allan Wolf must of done makes this novel not only a wonderful piece of writing, but an essential part of Titanic-lore from now on. I specifically liked how after the story was completed, an afterword was added with Titanic information and a clarification of the fact vs. fiction within the novel specifically when it came to the characters. This novel will be used in classes learning about the Titanic for years to come because of the historical accuracy and the interesting and in-depth way the story is told. It is also a perfect addition to any English Language Arts classroom because it has perfect examples of different types of poetry (each character has their own style), using dialogue in poetry, historical fiction, figurative language and other literary devices and using multiple-genres. I feel that this book is a great way to teach these elements because the Titanic is such a well known topic which would lend well to students connecting with and understanding the text. This book truly makes history come alive.

The book is international in scope and an entertaining walk through history. People representing all types of occupations are covered, from U.S. presidents to Greek philosophers to entertainers and sports figures. Brief biographical information is given about each person, and sources are given wherever possible. The anecdotes range in spirit from the very moving to the amusing and ridiculous, with the emphasis on the latter two. Typical is the entry under Hank Aaron: "During the 1957 World Series, Yankee catcher Yogi Berra noticed that Aaron grasped the bat the wrong way. 'Turn it around,' he said, 'so you can see the trademark.' But Hank kept his eye on the pitcher's mound: 'Didn't come up here to read. Came up here to hit.' " The arrangement is alphabetical by person, with name and subject indexes. The introduction includes an excellent essay on the definition, history and purpose of anecdotes. Anecdotes are brief stories we like to tell about people, more succinct than gossip and more respectable. Most in this dictionary have been "pilfered" (vii) from other collections, but on the other hand there are an informative introduction, an index of themes, and a bibliography of sources. The anecdotes themselves are arranged under the name of the person they're about. That this is a reference book, however, is doubtful: many of the anecdotes are followed by a cautionary note that they have been told of others as well or are apocryphal, and it's unlikely that much seriously useful biographical information is revealed in them, no matter how entertaining or true. This excellent book of anecdotes is a necessary addition to any teacher's library...Or anyone's bookshelf who does any speaking at all. A good anecdote
tells you more about a person than a whole volume of factual material...And this book if full of interesting, often humorous stories. I love this book. Thanks, Amazon!

Worth Reading

This is a pretty interesting book. I have both the paperback and the Kindle version. The only fault I find with the paperback is the use of French phrases in some of the anecdotes with, in a number of cases, no translation to English. As for the Kindle version, the editing is atrocious, but a reader who is actually fluent in the English language should have no trouble deciphering what is meant.

Do you wish you lived in Paris?

If you are curious about what it would be like to live in Paris, this is a book for you. It gives you a realistic picture of some of the hurdles you will need to deal with if you move from the U.S. to France. You will probably not end up with a large group of French friends, especially if you are not fluent in French. But Paris can be a charming, exciting, and addictive place to live.

This was an enjoyable and informative comprehensive guide towards the study of human behavior, a book that fleshes out the many complications of the brain and its responses to difficult life situations. In this stressful world, Vermeulen provides a great overview of the basics of psychology while also giving some valuable advice toward better understanding of one’s own sometimes subconscious reactions to life’s challenges. I left this book with a greater concept of my own psychology and the way I react to the world, and feel like I gained some “personal intelligence” along the way. I recommend this book highly for those interested in modern theories of psychology and looking to make positive changes for better self-awareness.

Personal Intelligence is something i had not heard before. I heard of Emotional Intelligence, Intelligence Quotient, Social Intelligence but not this new Personal Intelligence. This new type of an intelligence is really interesting.

I never been a fan of the law of attraction and wishful thinking, so I can appreciate the attempt to debunk the entire universal wishful thinking delusion. I like how the author is all about focus and smart thinking. There is definitely a shift of thinking with this new science.

The facts about love and emotions are very fascinating. If you're all about smart living then you will enjoy this great book.

An insightful and useful examination of emotional intelligence, self esteem and intelligence in general. For anyone that wishes to be a better human being with more productive relationships and careers, this will be very enlightening. Of course, it's all about how one applies these revelations. A certain amount of unbiased self-examination is needed. And a heavy does of honest self awareness. Is that even possible? The author thinks so. And she's very smart so I'm going with HER!

When Rico tells him that he has enough money to pay for a coyote to help him cross into El Norte, Victor is unable to decide if he, too, should go along and look for work or try to feed his family with the pitiful annual corn harvest. The decision is made for him the next day when he discovers that the corn prices have bottomed out and that there is no point in even planting this year. Readers suffer with the 15-year-old as he makes his painful decision to leave his mother and younger siblings and attempts the dangerous border crossing, jumping trains, fleeing thieves and border officials, and suffering from thirst and hunger. His desperation and fear are completely believable as he faces near-death situations and must decide whom to trust. The author deftly weaves information concerning the local geography and customs into the plot. The story is well paced, sustaining readers' attention throughout. Pair this novel with Ann Jaramillo's La Línea (Roaring Brook, 2006) for another fictional view of young people crossing the border between the U.S. and Mexico. No longer able to grow corn profitably in his Mexican village, 15-year-old Victor, who has supported his family since his father's death, resolves to go to El Norte: "It's time for me to do what men from our village have to do." Lacking the money to secure a guide, he ventures to a border town to wait his chance in the "whirlpool" of recent deportees, newcomers, and grizzled mojados ("wetbacks"). Successive attempts find him trekking through mountains and desert, fleeing la migra, and unwittingly becoming entangled with ruthless drug traffickers. Hobbs' effort to show a broad view of the border-crossing experience, often by incorporating the hard-luck tales of Victor's acquaintances, results in a story arc that occasionally feels artificial. But the questions raised here are provocative and worthwhile ("Are [Americans] willing to pick the fruits and the vegetables to fill their grocery stores?"), and the propulsive adventure-and-survival elements will keep Hobbs' core audience hooked. Timely and insightful story

Read this book because it was assigned to my son for his summer reading program. What a great story! It should generate lively discussion in his freshman class about immigration. The story of Victor and his friend, Rico, trying to make their way across the boarder is compelling especially given their ages. Hobbs paints a descriptive picture of the Mexican border and their many trials and tribulations....fascinating stuff and definitely recommended.

What I liked was that Victor and Rico went to cross the border between the two countries Mexico and the United States of America to send home to there family money and how Rico went back in return to see his parents. I think that my family and friends should read this book because I think that they would like it like me .

Mr. Hobbs has used vivid imagery to recreate this suspenseful , and at times a graphic tale of a 15year old, Mexican boy's illegal trek across the U.S. border. He encounters mules, coyotes, and many helpful yet wise travel companions. He learns about life along his arduous journey as he strives to fulfill his goal to feed his family in Silao, Mexico.

I believed whole-heartedly in global warming before I read this book. I was a big believer. This book completely turned me around and helped me see how shallow my thinking was. I recommend it to anyone. It's also great about the other myths out there. Such a great analysis.

An anthology worth picking up

The good part about anthologies is that they tend to cover more ground than an author normally would on his/her own. Such serves the reader well. "Global Warming and Other Eco-myths" does cover much ground in the realm of "fierce ecological advocacy," handling topics on population, natural resources, water, industrial products, and of course, global warming. There are three chapters on general policy-philosophy which go along with topic-specific chapters.

The themes which run through all parts of the book may roughly be summarized as: 1. Strident environmentalism needs to be braked with logical thinking and a truthful look at actual data; 2. Too many "hot" environmental topics of the past have been misunderstood at best, intentionally misleading at worst; 3. Human beings are not Earth's pests; and 4. Human brains are the most powerful force for solving these largely technological problems discussed in the book. No reader will agree with everything in this work. In fact Ron Bailey, the editor, has since this book's publication changed much of his mind on the global warming part! [[...]

The basic elements of overhead power line technology have been known for many years. However, this technology has continuously developed, for example, adjusting the design of the lines to new transmission needs and to available rights-of-way, and to accommodate environmental concerns or resources. Since many existing overhead line installations are approaching the end of their economic and technical lifetime, strategies for maintenance to extending their operational life are needed. Also, because of the introduction of new standards and deregulation, the basis of design and verification for all aspects and steps in overhead line planning and construction has changed. The industry, therefore, requires a publication reflecting these developments and changes.
