Terrible book with a nice cover.

not worth 99 cents, so glad I got it for free with Kindle unlimited. The author provides a few one paragraph examples of recent intrusions and provides a few reasons people hack. But the reasons, stealing, boredom, disruption, financial gain and ethical hacking are only a few sentences each with no depth. Finally his attempt to explain how to learn hacking is terrible. Basically he says to learn linux, some programming languages, and html. He doesn't even mention basic networking concepts such as scanning, port numbers, services, credentials, passwords, hashes, etc, which are way more important than programming languages or html. Don't waste your time or money!

The Beginner's Guide to Hacking

In Hacking: Cyber Security Playground Guide, we learn that computer hacking which is normally reserved for geeks or nerds is a skill that may be beneficial to regular individuals who are interested in creating a safe computer work environment.

The news media regularly covers hacking stories such as the Sony hack that gained access to thousands of computers, and brought the company’s operations to a standstill. Which included the release of pirated movies and embarrassing emails to the community. Other hackers gain access to computers in order to steal financial data, such as credit card information or Social Security numbers that they can sell on the black market to the highest bidder. These destructive hackers are otherwise labeled in the industry as Crackers.

Governments both international and domestically actively pursue and arrest these Crackers, charging them with cyber crimes and gives them long jail terms. There are several reasons why people hack into computer systems; to steal money or information, boredom or to cause disruptions with computer viruses.

The concept of ethical hacking creates a safe environment for individuals to learn the techniques for protection purposes, and also to gain a broader knowledge of IT systems and industry. The author includes information on where a beginner should start to learn the basics of hacking. The first thing to start with is an open source platform or software such as UNIX unlike Microsoft which is a closed source. You can read more in the book further about the additional programs and tools needed to learn the various coding programs that are the basis of hacking.

Hacking requires a certain skill set, especially patients, and although it has been portrayed in a negative light, ethical hacking will go a long way in bringing a positive outlook to this cyber arena.

Not a very well written book or manual , lots of general information and not much else. Simple Google search of a few terms will get you much further if you are interested in the subject.

About the Author
Jacqueline Murray Brux received her Ph.D. in Economics in 1983 from the University of Michigan in Ann Arbor. A respected economic professional, Dr. Brux's area of expertise is the economic development of developing countries. Her research encompasses the area of economic development, with special focus on women in development and the effects of structural reforms. Dr. Brux's international experiences include work and research in the countries of Burkina Faso and Ghana in West Africa; Mexico, Chile, and Cuba in Latin America; Russia; and Vietnam.

Janna L. Cowen received her Ph.D. in Economics from the University of Nebraska - Lincoln in 1979; she has been at UW-River Falls ever since. Her teaching and research interests are in the areas of government regulation of business and labor economics. She was the 1987 Teacher of the Year at UW-RF and the 1988 Outstanding Teacher in the Social Sciences.

A classic. Still authoritative.

This is an authoritative textbook on ion channels that is often quoted in numerous textbooks in neurophysiology. Hille himself has contributed a lot in this field. The Hogkin-Huxley model is the de facto standard model in neurophysiology but certain things about neurons cannot be explained only with voltage-controlled sodium and potassium channels. With the patch-clamp technique, we have found a way to explore other interesting channles. To remind you, there are a world of ion channels! Hille's textbook show there are indeed a variety of channels most of which are poorly understood. As a reviewer below has commented, it also gives a unique insight into the history of neural membrane research. Concepts are explained with clearity. Details measurement techniques.

Destined to become an Oprah Book Club selection

Some books have opening sentences that grab you in an instant. "Call me Ishmael." "It was the best of times, it was the worst of times." And now, Hille joins the list of authors to reach out and grab us, with the awe-inspiring "Ion channels are macromolecular pores in cell membranes."

Even after my fifth reading, that line still gives me the shivers.

But it takes more than a brilliant opening to make a great book, and Hille delivers. A staple of electrophysiology

If you are interested in the science of electrophysiology, this is your textbook. Starts with basic, ground concepts and works it way up. Begin with an intro of Ohm's law, etc. and the history of electrophysiology and moves to more in depth material for each ion channel. The only drawback is that this is the most up to date version, so there has been some progress since then. But for anyone involved in patch clamping, this is a must read.

My two boys, ages four and six love this book. My four year old loves simple books like this. My six year old is learning to read so it is perfect for their age category. There is a sentence or two on each page and the book is a very sturdy board book which is nice for wear and tear.

Sometimes, I don't know what to buy my husband. He recently had a birthday. One of his main passions is football. Personally, I don't know much about football. I thought about getting him a video game for his most recent birthday. However, I wanted something different this time. So, I found this book. I bought it and read some of it. I figured at least this way he gets two presents. I wanted him to know that what he cares about matters to me. I thought the book was very informative about the Chip Kelly Offense. Furthermore, the book is well written. My husband absolutely loved this book! He read the whole book in one sitting. Now, I know that I can add football books to potential future presents.

The basics of Chip Kelly's offense explained

This book covers the basics of coach Chip Kelly's offense used by the Philadelphia Eagles and Oregon Ducks. It reads a lot like a collection of web articles assembled in book form, and if you are expecting an in-depth playbook, this is not the book. However, it does a good job of showing the basics of the scheme. A good introduction to a much talked about offense in football.

This book doesn't get into the details of X's and O's like one would think. Most of this info can be found for free on Fish-duck.com. This books speaks in generalities and is an outsider looking in perspective. I would have expected more diagrams and plays against different defenses not just a base 4-2-5 or 4-3.

About the Author
Ram Charan is a business adviser who has worked with executives and directors of many companies, including DuPont, GE, Novartis, Verizon, and RBS Group (Brazil). He has served on the Harvard Business School faculty, teaches in Wharton Executive Education, and serves on the board of Hindalco (India). He is the author of eighteen books.

Dennis Carey is Vice Chairman of Korn/Ferry International. He has placed some of the most prominent chief executives and corporate directors in the United States, including those at 3M, American Express, Goldman Sachs, GSK, Humana, MCI, and Tyco International. This is his fourth book on CEO succession and corporate governance.

Michael Useem is a professor of management and the director of the Center for Leadership and Change Management at the University of Pennsylvania’s Wharton School. He offers courses on leadership and has authored books on leadership and corporate governance, including The Leadership Moment and Investor Capitalism.

A Call to Leadership Around a Central Idea: a Board Guide for Navigating Choppy Waters

"Boards that Lead" is a call to leadership for boards of directors. In it, authors Ram Charan (renown business adviser and former Harvard Business School teaching great), Dennis Carey (Vice-Chairman, Korn/Ferry Intl), and Michael Useem (Univ Of Penn professor and head of its Leadership and Change Management Center) claim that the time has come for boards to rebalance their responsibilities and take a more active role in the leadership of the enterprise. They point out that there is a delicate balance - board leadership does not mean micro-managing but rather, establishing a deeper relationship among directors and with executive teams by requiring directors to educate themselves on strategy, risk management, and talent development. Board members must also learn when to take charge and when to stay out of the way.

"Boards That Lead" provides the reasons for this, the principles on how to do this, and the cost of not doing this. Charan et al believe that "directors remain one of the most valuable least utilized company's assets there. Their wisdom and guidance are still too often closeted." This book provides practical and actionable advice to build on the tangible experience of directors and executives in creating enterprise value.

Charan et al begin the book outlining the importance of an enterprise's central idea - "why the company exists, whom it serves, how should be nurtured, why it will flourish, how it will make money and manage risk, where it must be going if it is to sustain a competitive presence and achieve its broader purpose. The central idea is the bedrock on which the enterprise is raised and how its resources are spent. It is easily translated into action. The board needs to be sure the central idea is clear and compelling that every board member understands it. The central idea provides a rudder that lets the board and management navigate through the choppy waters (that are most certainly) ahead."

The board must be actively involved in developing the enterprise's central idea. Every board member and executive must own it. It is the company's DNA and everything related to the enterprise flows from it.

The "central idea" concept is one that Charan has been advocating since the 1980s. When successfully done, it gets everyone on the same page and creates a laser-like focus on creating value. Unfortunately, many boards have yet to adopt this concept and for this reason, they and their enterprises are like corks on water floating off to wherever the currents take them. I can personally attest that getting board members and executives to agree on the central idea is very hard work; but with the reward of providing a big return in value.

"Boards That Lead" goes on with actionable advice and examples (including invaluable check lists) for recruiting directors, rooting out board dysfunction (at least 50% of Fortune 500 boards have1-2 dysfunctional members), establishing a board leader, managing CEO succession, managing a falling CEO, turning risk into opportunity, board governance, director evaluation, and the division of responsibilities.

The authors use plenty of case study examples throughout the book, including Apple, HP, Infosys, Ford, GlaxoSmithKline, Lenovo, Brazil's Group RBS, Delphi, and many more.

"Boards That Lead" will be a very useful and valuable guide for board members, CEOs, and potential board members worldwide. While written for larger public companies (U.S. and non-U.S.), smaller public and private (including start-ups) will find great value in this as well.

Another example of why Ram Charan is one of my favorite business writers!

My opinion: This book is an absolute winner and another example of why Ram Charan is one of my favorite business writers.

Mr. Charan wrote Boards That Lead in a CONCISE case study/example format with important take-aways at the end of each chapter to stress what needs to be ingrained in the reader's head. Since this is a common format of his, he is one of the business writers that I learn most from.

One criticism that I must admit that I had of the book is that Mr. Charan mainly focused on very large, Fortune 500 companies. I would have liked to have seen some smaller/mid sized companies included in the case studies. Also, a focus on different sectors and industries would have been appreciated, such as non-profit, healthcare.

Nevertheless, this book is in my business book pile to purchase. I think that there was enough to garner from the book that a "best practices" approach would apply.

The authors contend some boards are well run, benefitting the companies/organizations they serve, and others that are not. In 2006 H-P and IBM had about the same market valuations, but by 2013 HP had a market capitalization of $52 billion and IBM was worth $192 billion. IBM had a stable board with a successful relationship with the CEO, while the board at HP was scandal-riven. The variance originates from the human dynamics, social architecture, and business leadership of the various boards. Too often, collegiality trumps independence and it becomes impolitic to challenge the CEO. A board's role is not to be reactive, passive, and accepting. The authors' first manifesto - governing boards should take an active leadership role in vital organization decisions (CEO succession, executive compensation, goal choices and urgency, merger decisions, ethics, allocation of capital, etc.), and not just monitor management. However, board involvement should not go so far as to constitute meddling and create fractured authority.

Decades ago, stockholdings were widely dispersed among thousands of investors (6% of corporate equity was held by institutional investors), none with sufficient clout to impact things, and boards were largely ceremonial. Today institutions hold 73% of equity and demand attention; in addition, activist investors have also gained clout. In addition, relatively recent legal actions have established two standards for director obligation - exercising reasonable caution and good fiduciary judgment. Sarbanes-Oxley of 2002, and Dodd-Frank of 2010 has also empowered and holds directors accountable in several areas. Meanwhile, poison pill defenses have declined from 59% to 8%, and staggered-term directors from 61% to 20%, while board attention to company strategy now occupies twice as much time as shareholder concerns.

Absent cohesiveness, liberated board members can hijack board meetings and waste valuable top management time in between meetings by eg. pursuing inappropriate requests for long-term strategy, personal goal choices, or detailed operational minutiae, as well as giving long monologues. The board needs to form a consensus, often w/o taking votes, by ensuring all voices are heard and coming to explicit consensus on key matters. Absent such risks the CEO ending up with a 50-point to-do list compiled from every director's wishes. Sometimes the Chair needs to corral an off-point member by pointing out that the group doesn't agree and it needs to move on. Sometimes the CEO also needs to be told that certain presentations are overly time-consuming. (The authors contend that about half of Fortune 500 companies have one or two directors they would regard as 'dysfunctional.') It also helps to have the Chair restate the general consensus, central issues, and action items for management before the meeting ends. Simply increasing the length of meetings or holding more meetings is not the answer. Successful boards include group dynamics in their self-evaluations, best conducted by informal interviews by a third-party interviewer who reports back to the Chair.

Another characteristic of successful boards is designing in advance what information they need, as well as how and when it is provided. Members also spend time outside meetings learning about the organization - from employees, analysts, major customers.

A board's most important job is making certain the entity has the right CEO. Charan states he has analyzed 82 CEO failures over the past 20 years, as well as successes. Many boards doom their efforts by considering CEO candidates w/o knowing what they're looking for, especially the specific (not generic) skills and relationships the company needs most. Usually it takes 1 - 2 years to fully assess whether a new CEO is the right one, and another year or so to conclude to replace a CEO. Making certain the CEO's direct reports pass muster makes future CEO selection easier as well as wide-spread effective talent. Also important is making certain top management has the right compensation package that encourages/discourage key behaviors. Get it wrong, and a CEO could go on a debt-fuelled acquisition spree that at the extreme lands the firm in bankruptcy.

Charan believes boards should focus on providing companies with strategic advice. The second area of focus - getting their relationship with the CEO right, acting as personal mentors, high-level talent scouts, giving frank advice, as well as monitors in the Sarbanes-Oxley mold.

Board members must take care to phrase questions in a way that doesn't make the CEO defensive - eg. "I'd like to better understand how pricing affects our margins," instead of "I don't think we are being very aggressive in pricing." Criticism should be constructive and fast, not sugar-coated, inordinately delayed, or unnecessarily harsh.

Overall, Charan et al provide 18 valuable checklists to help transform board directors from monitors to leaders. The 'bad news' - this book is largely a repeat of his earlier 'Boards that Deliver.'

About the Author
Damon Tweedy is a graduate of Duke Medical School and Yale Law School. He is an assistant professor of psychiatry at Duke University Medical Center and staff physician at the Durham VA Medical Center. He has published articles about race and medicine in the Journal of the American Medical Association (JAMA) and the Annals of Internal Medicine. His columns and op-eds have appeared in the New York Times, the Chicago Tribune, the Raleigh News & Observer, and the Atlanta Journal-Constitution. He lives outside Raleigh-Durham, North Carolina.

Fantastic, eye-opening memoir

Black Man in a White Coat is Damon Tweedy’s memoir of his experience as a black man getting into medical school up through becoming a practicing physician. At the very beginning of medical school, one of his professors mistook him for a maintenance worker even though he was dressed nicely and had been in his class for a month. Tweedy recounts his embarrassment, even though it was the professor who should have been embarrassed. He also talks about the mixed emotions he felt about a form of affirmative action being one of the reasons that he was admitted to Duke medical school.

Once he starts interacting with patients, he has a variety of experiences related to race that make him aware of the issues that both black doctors and black patients face. Some of them aren’t too surprising (although still horrible), like the white patient who didn’t want a black doctor. Some were very surprising to me. For instance, he encountered a black patient who didn’t want a black doctor. Tweedy backs up his personal examples with research that shows whatever issues he encounters exist on a larger scale. They are not isolated incidents experienced only by him.

Tweedy writes about medical information in an accessible manner with a conversational tone. My eyes were opened to race related issues in the medical field that I hadn’t previously considered. This is a great memoir that I highly recommend.

Phenomenal memoir offers much needed perspective on race and medicine.

Dr. Damon Tweedy's first novel, Black Man in a White Coat, is a fascinating look into the racial and socioeconomic problems that face physicians, medical students, and patients across America. Dr. Tweedy's reflections on how his identity as an African American male affected his training and development as a physician and young man reveal the biases and traditions of medicine and how they can negatively impact those who find themselves categorized as the "other". I highly recommend this book to those interested in the culture of medicine, particularly new medical students interested in issues of representation and social justice.

Dr. Tweedy writes with a strong, balanced, and humble voice. I cannot wait for his next book!

Great discussion of bias in medicine

I heard Dr Tweedy speak at the Decatur Book Festival in Georgia a few days ago (he said it was his first time speaking at a book fair) and was inspired to buy the book. Part memoir and part discussion of bias in medicine, it is truly an eye-opener (though if you think about it, it should not be) into the way doctors often make snap judgments about their patients. For instance, he found that doctors were quicker to prescribe drugs for their poor black patients, rather than suggest lifestyle changes because they already were assuming that "people like that" wouldn't change their diet or exercise. Dr. Tweedy even found these kinds of biases residing within himself. He also discusses the challenges of our health care system, his own journey through medical school and his own experiences with prejudice, both from patients and other doctors. He also points out that you can't put all the blame on the system and the doctor for your poor health -- people have to take responsibility for their wellbeing too. The book was very well written and I highly recommend it.
