An ultra-Orthodox version of the Bible

This translation and commentary is interesting. It contains the Hebrew text, the Aramaic translation of Onkelos, and an English translation and commentary. The problem with the edition is that is reflects an ultra-Orthodox Jewish perspective, and does so by sometimes misquoting the sources that it presents. This has been documented by many scholars.

I enjoy the insight I get from the old Jewish scholars. They have been studying the Torah a long time. Even tho I may disagree with some of their findings on the whole I've learned a lot about the culture and times in which the Torah was written.

About the Author

Phil Page, MS, PT, ATC, CSCS, trained under the guidance of Dr. Vladimir Janda and has taught the Janda approach at national and international workshops. A certified kinesiotaping practitioner, Page is currently working toward his doctorate in kinesiology at Louisiana State University in Baton Rouge, where his research focuses on EMG and muscle imbalance. He is also director of clinical education and research for Thera-Band products.

 

Page and his wife, Angela, live in Baton Rouge with their four children. In his free time, he enjoys spending time with his family, fishing, and cooking.

 

Clare C. Frank, DPT, is an orthopedic clinical specialist in private practice in Los Angeles. She serves on the clinical faculty for Kaiser Permanente Movement Science Fellowship in Los Angeles. She also serves as a guest lecturer at the local universities and teaches throughout the United States and internationally.   

 

Frank studied under and taught with Dr. Vladimir Janda. She is a certified instructor of the Janda approach to musculoskeletal pain syndromes, a certified kinesiotaping practitioner, and a certified instructor of Kolar’s approach to dynamic neuromuscular stabilization.

 

Frank is board certified in orthopedic physical therapy and a fellow of the American Academy of Orthopedic Manual Physical Therapy.

Robert Lardner, PT, was born in Nigeria in 1961. His first career was as a professional ballet and modern dancer after studying at the Rambert Academy outside London, England. He graduated from the department of physical therapy, Lund’s University, Sweden in 1991. He studied with Professors Janda, Lewit and Kolář from the Czech Republic, who are pioneers of functional rehabilitation and manual medicine.

 

Lardner worked in several inpatient and outpatient rehabilitation facilities in Sweden prior to moving to the United States in 1992. He was a staff physical therapist at McNeal Hospital, Clearing Industrial Clinic, and a physical therapy supervisor at Mercy Hospital. He also was in charge of physical therapy services at a number of private outpatient and sports clinics.

 

Lardner is currently in private practice in Chicago and teaches various rehabilitation seminars throughout the United States and Europe.

I bought this book on the recommendation of a colleague who works in rehabilitation medicine. The book was very well written and provided evidence for the premises they put forth. It gives insight into the evaluation and treatment approaches of orthopedic conditions according to Janda and how this treatment approach has evolved over time. There are good illustrations and useful tests and measures to aid in the treatment of persons with orthopedic conditions. A very good resource for health care professionals.

Not happy

There were over 100 pages missing from book. There is an answer section to the book which would have been very helpful. I just had my first radiology exam in dental school and when I found the pages missing I was very upset!!

Not just for Gourmets

Don't be put off by the dour photo on the cover. MFK Fisher has a lively wit and a breezy style of writing that is a joy to read. In this book she takes on topics based on the alphabet. In dining Alone, she describes the difficulty of being a food writer. She is never invited to her friend's because they think their cooking isn't good enough, so instead she goes home to a lonely supper of canned soup and crackers. The chapter on Bachelors describes a meal that on the surface is dreadfull but is made delightful due to the care and effort of the gentleman to provide hospitality to his guest. Every chapter is full of charm and the recipes are quite good. A very enjoyable book.

Particularly enjoyable for her rather obscure selection of an alphabet by which to write about food. If you want more, I recommend the compendium The Art of Eating, by the same author. This woman really enjoyed food, even the simplest meal, which might even be eaten alone and enjoyed more for the experience.

For decades, stories by Yiddish women writers were available only to those who spoke the “mother tongue” of Eastern European Jews. This translation brings some of the “lost” women writers of the golden age of Yiddish to English-speaking readers.

Their stories range from the wryly humorous—a girl seeking a wet nurse for her cousin brings him to a shiksa, with dire consequences—to the bittersweet, as a once-idealistic revolutionary now sees her hopes for humanity as “fantasy.” The title is from a poem that describes a widow arguing with a storm that threatens her harvest. It is a metaphor for the Holocaust, whose dark cloud was rising. Arguing with the Storm is a joy to read and a tribute to all those women, who, in arguing with the storm, fought to protect their families and way of life.

The anthology includes works by Sarah Hamer-Jacklyn, Bryna Bercovitch, Anne Viderman, Malka Lee, Frume Halpern, Rochel Bruches, Paula Frankel-Zaltzman, Chava Rosenfarb, and Rikuda Potash.

Rhea Tregebov teaches creative writing at the University of British Columbia and is the author of six critically acclaimed books of poetry, most recently (alive): Poems New and Selected. She collected these tales with the help of the Winnipeg Women’s Yiddish Reading Circle.

About the Author
Rhea Tregebov was born in Saskatoon, Saskatchewan, Canada and raised in Winnipeg, where she received her undergraduate education. She did her graduate work in literature at Cornell and Boston Universities, receiving her M.A. from BU in 1978. Tregebov is the author of six critically acclaimed books of poetry, including (alive): New and Selected Poems. She has also published five popular children's picture books. In addition to Arguing with the Storm, she is the editor of a number of anthologies of essays, poetry and fiction, including Gifts: Poems for Parents. Her work has received a number of literary prizes, including the Pat Lowther Award, Prairie Schooner Readers' Choice Award, and the Malahat Review Long Poem Award for her poetry.

Thank you, Winnipeg Yiddish Women's Reading Circle!

In 2000, a group of senior Jewish women in Winnipeg, intrigued by the large Yiddish collection at the Winnipeg Public Library, decided to form a reading circle for discussion of these works. Concerned that these works would be lost, they began to translate the stories and memoirs, and this book is the result.

Although the women represented here are all Eastern European, they led varied lives, some active in the worlds of literature and journalism, others not so much. Some emigrated, to the United States, to Canada, to Palestine (as it was then); others were lost in the Holocaust. All had something to say.

The works of the nine writers represented here range geographically from the shtetl to Miami Beach, in time from the 1905 Revolution to the present. The characters are young women and old, country and city dwellers, immigrants, Holocaust survivors, and their children and grandchildren. Some are funny, some somber, some in between.

If your idea of the shtetl was formed by "Fiddler on the Roof", read Rochel Broches devastating account of the short life of mamzers in "Little Abrahams" or Sarah Hamer-Jacklyn's "No More Rabbi!" Hamer-Jacklyn and Frume Halpern write movingly of the plight of older women, the search for stability and love. Bryna Bercovitch and Paula Frankel-Zaltzman are represented by their memoirs, the one of life in the Ukraine, the other of the Dvinsk ghetto.

We owe the Winnipeg Women's Yiddish Reading Circle a debt of gratitude for rescuing these stories from the library's dusty shelves, and making them available to a new audience.

The translated stories that are compiled in this book show the strength and determination and spirit of women who faced major life obstacles. These stories would have been lost forever if not for the author's search to have then translated and then compiled in this wonderful book.

I was very moved by this book. Beyond the evident literary quality, there was a sense of really entering into the lives of these women, whose stories have been obscured for so many decades by neglect and bias. I think this anthology will resonate for readers from many backgrounds and of many ages. Read it, buy it for your friends, mothers, grandmothers.
