The final chapters provide an explanation of the genetically related clinical skills and competencies expected of a medical student, together with an overview of the principles of clinical genetics, a rapidly developing clinical specialty which now impinges on almost every aspect of medical practice.

Over 150 illustrations have been included to demonstrate important principles and commonly encountered genetic disorders. Each chapter contains a brief review of a major landmark publication to provide a historical context for more contemporary developments. To help sustain the student's interest and to emphasise the potential importance of genetics in medicine, large numbers of clinically related vignettes have been included covering controversial issues, such as gene patenting and the UK Biobank, together with case histories and brief biographies of famous figures from history and the arts who have suffered from, and successfully coped with, a genetic disorder.

Sam Schrager is a member of the faculty at The Evergreen State College in Olympia, Washington, where he teaches cultural and community studies. Riveting scholarship

Disclosure: I know the writer socially. When he told me he'd written a textbook, I ordered it as I usually do with friends' books. Frankly, I was expecting an academic tome about folkloric scholarship and how it applies to trials. What I didn't expect was a fascinating, easy-to-read discussion of trial lawyers as storytellers, with lots of well-chosen examples from experts in the field. Professor Schrager uses trial transcripts to show various rhythms and cadences used by prosecutors and defense attorneys to make their cases to ordinary citizens. He highlights the images and motifs excellent lawyers develop over time as they become expert persuaders, and brings you into the cases themselves. I was so absorbed in the story of one trial that I stayed up reading until 3 am.

Scholars of folklore, students of literary arts, trial lawyers and anyone who's ever served on a jury will find this book fascinating. And I'm not just saying so because my friend wrote it. It's really good.

Persuasive lawyers

Entertaining book about some American lawyers, Roger E. King, John Shepherd ("sophisticated folksy" style), Roy Barrera,...Also the historic ones like Clarence Darrow are referred to; the outstanding Johnnie Cochran, "an expert on the manipulation of cultural identity". And their art: cadences, rich tonalities, rhythmic language, poetic diction, and unusual body movements. All mixed with popular aphorisms, "If you have the evidence, you argue the facts. If you don't have the evidence, you argue the law. If you don't have either, you just argue". The jury system, crucial in this culture, "common sense is what makes the jury system work!" they say. In short, an amusing parade of best lawyers and their shrewd examinations and closing speeches.

L'Amant - original french version of the Lover by Duras

The novel, L'Amant, by Marguerite Duras written in the 50's was translated into English. The Lover, and became the basis for the movie The Lover starring Tony Leung. A great movie which stimulated me to read the book in English which then stimulated me to read the original. The English version is a literal translation of the French and possesses the flow and passion of the original. The movie is one of the best renditions of a book I have seen. In Netflix, the movie gets mixed reviews ranging from brilliant to those who get emotionally upset by the theme of the movie, which is an older (32 year old) Chinese man who has an affair with a very mature 15 year old French girl in Vietnam. But who is seducing or using who? Beautifully written (the books) and directed (movie).

I read the English version and wanted to compare the English with the French. It worked perfectly.
The author has many excellent works but this is my favorite. It addresses poverty, survival, relationships and is very enjoyable to read.

Encyclopedic ...

... by which I mean a small amount of information about each of a large number of facts, with very little analysis or insight. And, just about as interesting to read as chapter after chapter of encyclopedia entries.

Looking at each chapter's bibliography, you can tell that the authors spent a lot of time poring over back issues of Aviation Week and other publications, so that might save you some time if you are researching a specific failure. And they do have a very extensive collection of failures - this is not just Apollo 13 and Ariane 5.

I was surprised to find mention (and a small amount of detail) of some of the relatively minor programs I have been involved with over the last 15 years or so. However, the visually spectacular failure of the Conestoga launch vehicle (certainly in the category of "minor players") wasn't covered, so this can't be said to be a definitive collection of every launch or spacecraft failure.

If you want to know how failures are analyzed post-mortem, or what processes and procedures are put in place to learn from those mistakes, you won't find it here. This is really just a diary of the timeline of failures in the Space Age.

Excellent book on space failures

This book examines failures related to space exploration in general. It is thorough, much more than I expected. A bit depressing, but it provides invaluable insight into the science, art and craft of building and launching satellites.

The book is divided in two quite different parts: launchers and satellites, with a special chapter on repairs undertaken from the space shuttle.
The launcher part is organized by launchers types, and has a very good objective of putting things in historical perspective, a very good point. The satellite part is organized by failures types. This is a wise way to do in this case.

There is not much to do in case of problems on a launcher apart from doing fault analysis, with corrections to be applied to the next launches. This is quite different and much more interesting with problems on satellites or probes.

They are examples of missions which looked like total write-offs being rescued by the skills and intelligence of engineers using treasures of imagination and ingenuity to rescue a mission, sometimes exceeding the objectives planned originally for the mission. ( Hipparcos, Deep Space 1, etc ) This makes the reading of this section very interesting, sometimes feeling like a thriller.

The real added value of this book is the description of the incredible ingenuity applied by engineers and operators to solve the problems when a satellite fails in orbit, therefore out of physical reach. This is the best part and shows that in general, human being are better to adapt to given situations and solve problems imposed on them than being able to predict them and act accordingly beforehand.

This is proven by the number of incredibly stupid faults described in the book, from the decimal point misplaced, to the calculations made in imperial units instead of metric, leading sometimes to billion size dollars bills.

I regret that some important recap tables (page 157) and some figures are not better printed or be made more readable. Also a good improvement would be to put a success/failures table at the end of each section covering a given launcher.

Also, I regret the absence of a simple tutorial chapter explaining the basics of rocket and satellite event recording and telemetry, the amount and nature of the parameters recorded, the various captors and a basic description of the procedures of post-mortem analysis. This would help appreciate even more the reading of the book.

No real insight or investigation

The references at the end of each chapter are mostly from Aviation Week. Basically, it is a collection of the press releases and Aviation Week reporting on the incidents covered in the book. That IS useful, but it could be so much more powerful with the insight that engineers who worked these programs could have brought.

All the information is available and some of the conclusions don't stand the test of time. One glaring example, when discussing the Chinese launch of commsats "18 July 1998 effectively marked the end of Chinese participation in the commercial launcher market." This has proved laughably untrue as China is one of the dominate players, whereas it is the USA that pushed out of this market.

Very good book!

This is a very well written book. The subject is in his early 30s, so there isn't a whole lot of lifetime to cover. Being a large baseball fan, I enjoyed the coverage of his rise to GM of one of the most popular teams in the Majors and his tactics for unprecedented success. The author's writing style is easy to follow and very clear and concise. I read the book in less than a day because I could not put it down. If you love baseball and the behind-the-scenes workings, then you must read this book.

This is a very poorly-written book

This book reminds me of an article one reads in Highlights for Kids in the fourth grade. There is no new information in it-- just a compilation of information culled from newspaper articles and mlb.com. I feel embarrassed to have purchased it.

Regurgitation of information found elsewhere

After reading an article about the writing of this book in the UConn daily newspaper, I was hesitant to buy it. Being a Red Sox fan, I did so anyway. Unfortunately, after reading it, I feel that my initial reaction was correct.

The positive: it was an easy, quick read. And it only cost $10. There were a few bits of new information in there that were interesting; Frascella seems to have gotten at least a few people to talk to him.

The negative: According to the UConn article and Frascella himself, this book was written over the vehement opposition of Theo Epstein, who did not cooperate with the project. Unfortunately, in his indefatigable efforts to violate Mr. Epstein's privacy, Frascella has accomplished little of note and could have left well enough alone. Most of the information in this book is a compilation of quotes and tidbits that most Sox fans will recognize from feature pieces done on Theo over the years by the Globe, the Yale Daily News, and other news outlets. You can read it all yourself for free by simply typing "Theo Epstein" into Google.

The book is written in a style that is easy enough to follow but is unsophisticated and often grating. For example, Frascella describes John Henry's business by quoting straight off the company website with no other information, leaving the reader with the impression that he did not actually do any in-depth research and has no real understanding of what Mr. Henry's company does. This repeats itself several times throughout. Quotes from Theo are twisted and placed to seem like Theo said this to Frascella when in fact it is something from a newspaper story, but there are no footnotes. It is woefully apparent that Frascella is short of primary sources. He seems to have gotten former Sox assistant Bill Lajoie to open up, along with Craig Shipley, and relies heavily on them for baseball operations information throughout; the slant shows. In one section, Frascella implies dubiously that during the 2005 offseason, Shipley and Lajoie did the vast majority of the work while Ben Cherington and Jed Hoyer took all the credit, and that Shipley and Lajoie were shafted by John Henry. This would be interesting, except that Frascella leaves us with nothing except Shipley and Lajoie's perspective. He includes nothing from Henry, Cherington, or Hoyer, and the reader has no idea what their interpretation of this actually is; I can only assume that they refused to talk to him because they are reportedly much closer to Theo and did not wish to violate his confidence. The section left me feeling that Hoyer and Cherington had been unfairly maligned. This is really too bad, as it was one of the few parts with original information.

Further tainting this book is the intermittently terrible baseball analysis contained within. Some of it is solid, but some of it is simply flat-out wrong. Anyone with an affinity for sabermetrics should probably avoid these parts.

In conclusion, I think the idea of this project is an excellent one; the problem lies in the execution. It is not possible to write a truly good biography of someone without that person's cooperation and with those who will talk to you doing so in violation of his confidence. It is also quite difficult to write an appropriate perspective when your subject is only 35 years old and still in the middle of his career. This should be redone in about 40 years with a mature writer (perhaps Frascella himself with more polish; the talent is there) who can get Mr. Epstein to cooperate with the project. Until then, it is going to be sorely lacking.

John Ostrander Does It Again

I am a big fan of John Ostrander. He's a phenomenal writer and The Stark Hyperspace War is no exception. At first, having read references to this event in other areas, I thought that there was no way that it could be fit into this volume and have any type of real content or flow. I am pleased to say that I was wrong. I really enjoyed this book.

Along with the writing, the artwork was awesome. This is an area that I'm really picky in. If I'm going to read a comic/graphic novel, I want to see great artwork. There have been many times that I have read a comic or graphic novel that had a good story, but I couldn't deal with the artwork and I actually put it down. The art and writing together here create something that is extraordinary in my eyes. If you are a Star Wars fan, this is a definite must.

Story is better than stated

Gives a good look as to the rising conflicts that the repbulic was dealing with on a daily basis. It just reminds people of what really counts in life and how not everyone receives the credit for their actions. This also leads up to the events of Star wars episode 1. Shows the rise of chancellor valorum and viceroy nute gunrey as well as delving into how great ploo koon is as a jedi master and member of the jedi council.

Boring, don't bother

I have read a lot of books by Ostrander and Duursema. In this book the artist is different and Ostrander has help from other authors. And that is the problem. I found this book to be incredibly tedious, partly from the fact is is written in flashback mode. And the art is not as good as Duursema's

I gave this 2 stars instead of 1, because there is some character backgrounding of notable Jedi and soon to be CIS/Imperial characters, Though its not developed enough to really give you any insight. It's almost like cameos.

Buy and READ

The third edition of Cultures and Organizations manages to significantly improve a great book. As a professor I have become deeply cynical of new editions -- I see shameless textbook producers make trivial changes every 18 months to kill off competition from used books. Fortunately this is not a text and the changes are real improvements from the previous edition.

If you are interested in globalization or comparative cultures you will want to buy and read this book even if you have already devoured the second edition. The most obvious changes: the expanded chapter (2) on studying cultural differences, the new proposed cultural dimension of indulgence (8), and the new chapter on evolution of cultures (12) are more than worth the time and effort of acquiring the new book.

This new edition resolves a dilemma for me: I was always torn between recommending Cultures and Consequences or Cultures and Organizations as an intro to Hofstede's ideas for someone who wanted a deep understanding of the research. I would now recommend that everyone, academic, business person, or curious reader, start with the third edition of Cultures and Organizations.

A beside must, travel companion and survival kit for corporate bs.

I first read/studied this book when I did my MBA in Graduate school. Since then, I have read and re-read it and each time, it has uncovered and unleashed more wisdom upon me on this topic. Not only does the book teach me how to isolate and be conscious of cultural sensitivities, it, more importantly reveals how unconscious, most people (we interact with) are on this topic. Cultural dimensions are examined and topics such as the "Power Distance", "Authority", "Time" "Non-Verbal communication", "Uncertainty avoidance", "Collectivism versus individualism", and "Femininity versus masculinity" are studied and explained in deeper depth.

I find that reading this book together with another book titled "International Business Communication" by Dr. David A. Victor would greatly enhance your understanding of the theories and concepts expounded by Dr. Hofstede. Dr. Victor invented a model (LESCANT) that simplifies the understanding of "Software of the Mind". "LESCANT is an acronym that represents seven areas in which cultural issues arise when dealing with international business communication. The acronym stands for Language, Environment, Social Organization, Context, Authority, Non-Verbal, and Time. Dr. David A. Victor, who is a professor of management and the Director of International Business Programs at Eastern Michigan University, created the model." [....]

Multiple views of this world

In these times of globalization, understanding and accepting cultural diversity and appreciating other people's views about life and how human beings should relate to one another is increasingly important. In the late sixties, Dr. Geert Hofstede became interested in the cultural diferences between countries and has researched this subject since then. This book presents his work for the non-academic reader. It is not an easy book, but the educated reader will be able to fully understand the ideas; reading an article about factor analysis in an encyclopeadia may help to grasp how the data was interpreted. The book itself does not use any mathematical approach. Dr. Hofstede has developed a model that tries to explain the cultural diferences between countries and organizations; this model has been refined and improved over decades. Based on statistical analysis of a large body of data, he suggests that culture may be understood according to a number of principal components, such as "power distance", "individualism x collectivism", "masculinity x femininity", etc; each concept is carefully defined and the measurement method is explained. A discussion of what to expect from the relative strength of each dimension is presented; in other words, the factors are, to some extent, predictors of the dominant values and behaviors, both individual and institutional, of a society. I was truly amazed by the accuracy of these predictions, at least for the few countries I have lived and worked in and recommend this book to anyone who deals often with people from other countries and cultures.
