It focuses on four successive generations of thinkers (Sadr al-Dīn al-Qūnawī, Mu'ayyad al-Dīn al-Jandī, 'Abd al-Razzāq al-Kāshānī, and Dāwūd al-Qaysarī), and examines how these "philosopher-mystics" refined and developed the ideas of Ibn al-'Arabī. Through a close analysis of texts, the book clearly traces the crystallization of an influential school of thought in Islamic history and its place in the broader intellectual culture.

Gentle and heart warming

This is the ninth instalment in Alexander McCall Smith's series about Isabel Dalhousie, editor of an ethics magazine and occasional sleuth. The last couple of books in the series were somewhat of a disappointment to me, but I enjoyed this one considerably more. Whilst the plot is as slim as ever - centering on Isabel's efforts to assist in the retrieval of a stolen painting - the book weaves its gentle charm over you as you read it. The "action" is interspersed with Isabel's musings on subjects as diverse as how to deal with rudeness in others, with whether we owe more to the people who live near us than people abroad and how to deal with conflict in marriages. I think what I like most about this series is the way it gets you thinking about the simple ways that you can live a more considerate life, about the importance of manners and kindness, without feeling that you are being preached to.

While many familiar characters make an appearance in the book - Grace has a falling out with Isabel and Eddie has romantic problems - others are barely mentioned, if at all. Cat is largely absent (hooray! no unsuitable boyfriends for once), as are Professors Dove and Lettuce. I was grateful for this, as it made the book feel less formulaic. I remain unconvinced by Isabel's relationships with Jamie and Charlie. Neither to me feel realistic, but at least her relationship with Jamie is made up of a little more this time round than just thinking about how lucky she is to have him.

I'm giving the book 3 stars because I liked, it but never found it terribly compelling and I suspect that in a week's time I'll be struggling to remember any of it. Having said that, I think that fans of the series will definitely enjoy it.

Another little gem.

I was so pleased that Alexander didn't axe the Dalhousie series after Isabel got married. I have found every book in the series a joy to read and love the way the author manages to weave his own beliefs through the characters without being long winded and pious. I guess I enjoy all his books because I subscribe to almost everything he has to say about life. If only the majority of the world were like minded.

a disappointment

This book was a disappointment. I usually like Alexander McCall Smith's work, but this one was hard to get through. The story is constantly derailed by Isabel's musings about just about everything but the plot. The main mystery of who stole the painting is never solved. The issue with Eddie and his girlfriend just disappears. And I can not understand Isabel's problem with Grace teaching her son mathematics. All in all a waste of time and money.

A Richly Informative, Engrossing Examination of Twentieth Century Music

alex Ross has the ability and the resources to write about the music of the 20th Century and to establish himself as the creator of the definitive volume with the publication of THE REST IS NOISE: LISTENING TO THE TWENTIETH CENTURY. His depth of knowledge is matched only by his ability to communicate with a writing style that places him in the echelon of our finest biographers. This book is indeed a comprehensive study of the music created in the 20th Century, but it is also a survey of all of the arts and social changes, effects of wars, industrialization, and quirks and idiosyncrasies that surfaced in that recently ended period of history: Ross may call this 'listening' to the 20th century, but is also visualizing and feeling the changes of that fascinating period.

Ross opens his survey with a detailed description of the premiere of Richard Strauss' opera SALOME and in doing so he references all of those in attendance (from Mahler to Schoenberg, the last of the great Romantics to the leader of the Modernist innovators) and focuses not only on the chances Strauss took using a libidinous libretto by the infamous Oscar Wilde to the astringent dissonances that surface in this tale of evil and necrophilia. Ross studies the influence of nationalism in music (the German School, the French School, the British and the American Schools) and then interweaves the particular innovations by showing how each school and each composer was influenced by the simultaneous destruction and reconstruction of the world borders resulting form the wars of that century. He dwells on the pacifists (Benjamin Britten et al) and those trapped by authoritarian regimes (Shostakovich et al), following the great moments as well as the dissonant chances that found audience at times far from the nidus of origin. A daring and scholarly book....

This is an exhaustive, professionally researched and concisely written book about Spanish Flamenco music. It rightly emphasizes the Cante, the singing, as the heart and soul of this art. But the book may be a little daunting for students, while offering much information for experienced aficionados and artists. Perhaps an opening chapter about Sevillanas would help dance students and young guitarists, because this dance is usually the first dance taught in Spanish Dance studios.
The book often lionizes the great guitarist Paco de Lucia, even though some of his innovations remain controversial, like injecting the final, signature chords of Verdiales into Bulerias and elsewhere, and introducing the Peruvian box drum, el cajon, which has become so overused that it often drowns out the dancer's footwork, castanets and finger snapping.
The author should be commended for discussing the dearth of women Flamenco guitarists on pp 79-80. After first trotting out the derogatory belief that womens hands are so weak that no amount of training can overcome an inborn inferiority, the author mentions that women can play demanding pieces on the piano; obviously, the girls can and do catch up! But unscrupulous guitar teachers will lower the pitch on a girl student's guitar to make the strings flaccid and easier to play. But the real reasons for the absence of women guitarists .are a complex of sociological shibboleths. Spain has thousands of girls and women who play ,musical instruments, guitars included, but professionally, these obstacles lie in wait. Andres Segovia wrote that a woman guitarist inspiured him to learn the instrument, but he never mentioned her name.
During the cafe cantante period and earlier, many people reported seeing women guitarists, like the 1774 quote in this book. Thomas Kent Pelham, an Bnglish artist who travelled in Spain and Italy, painted a picture of Spanish Gypsies encamped, with a girl dancing and a woman playing the guitar, presumably her mother.
When Gypsy dancing girls became popular in taverns, they wisely brought along male accompanyists, to protect them from men in the rowdy taven ambience. The women guitarists were left at home, and so Flamenco guitar became a man's profession. In a society that practices a gender division of labor, this benefits the men and bars women from opportunities. Accomplished woman guitarists ( instrumentalists, NOT a self-accompanying singer) who go professional face the risk of being treated like a joke or a freak, much as female athletes used to be treated.. This discrmination is nothing new, nor is it confined to Flamenco. The hostility and exclusion that American Jazz dished out to female instrumentalists exceeded that of the synphony orchestras during the same period. Women guitarists are also rare in classical guitar . But most symphony orchestras now audition people with a curtain so they cannot see if the person playing is male or female, or their race and ethnicity.
The author asserts that many generations must pass before this change seeps into Flamenco. Perhaps the box drum succeeded because it was introduced with the authority of Paco de Lucia, but so far, in the world of Flamenco guitar no one has had the temerity to suggest that God distributes musical talent without a gender division. Again, I commend this author for having dared to mention this topic.

I fell in love with flamenco in the early 70's. I started guitar lessons but then life took up all my time and I left flamenco in a memory. Now I am back and she is even more beautiful than she was before.

Excellent Read

This is a very interesting and informative book on flamenco, past and present. I would only add that it would have been nicer published as a small paperback book size since it is text only; it is a large book that is very difficult to handle, perhaps because Mel Bay wanted all their books to be the same size.

Is It For Beginners?

How much do you need to know to use this book? It won't tell you how to hold the guitar. It won't teach you how to read music in a systematic way. It won't tell you what a fret is, or how to select your pick. You need a theory and basic technique book -- I used Electric Guitar: Theory and Technique For All Levels by Lutz Academy. A week with that one, and I was ready for this one. So yeah -- it's for beginners. If playing guitar for only a week makes me a beginner. :)

One thing I was truly delighted with in Total Rock Guitar -- the songs you're playing to practice genuinely rock. Even the first one, which is super, super easy, is a lot of fun to play and I keep coming back to it just for sheer rocking out purposes. I highly recommend this book.

Great book for moving from acoustic to electric

I have been playing acoustic for a long time (20yrs), I self taught myself when I was a teen and have been playing rhythm guitar all these years. I look up music and play chords to the songs. I don't practice lots of theory even though I do understand lots of it. Well about a year ago I decided to buy an electric and start playing. Unfortunately my method of playing traditional chords does not work well with electric and I'm forced to learn electric playing technics. I bought this book as a way to create a pathway for me to learn. I have picked up tips and lessons on youtube but its just gives me bits and pieces that I would have to put together with no structure. This book to me seams like a good method for the guitarist that is already confortable playing but wants to learn technics that will help them advance in their electric playing. Unfortunately with me it was though to find material or classes because I'm not a beginer guitarist and have specific goals in mind. My goal is to learn some of the technics and styles needed to play electric and be able to jam and do basic solos. I would not recomend this book if you are totaly new at guitar as the progress would be slow and fustrating. If you are like me and want to move from acoustic playing and get into some rock playing, I think this book is great. Please keep in mind that I have only owned this book for 2 weeks and with my limited practice time I am mastering lesson 1 and moving to lesson 2. The CD that came with the book is easy to follow and play along and the songs are unique. Each track is recorded with Rythym outputting from one channel and the lead from the other (R and L), this allows you to adjust the balance of your output so you can get more lead or rythym based on the setting of your Right and Left balance control. I ripped the CD to my computer so I can have access to the files on my computer and Phone and have them on the go for practice. Your PC and audio player should have the option to change balance. For win7/8 you have to do the following:

Click on Start and then control panel.
Open the option of Sound and in the tab of playback click on the windows displaying speakers. This enables the button properties, click on it.
This opens new window as Speakers properties, here click on the tab Levels.
Now click on the button Balance in front of the speaker volume bar.
This will open another small window of Balance. Here you may adjust the balance between the left and right speakers as per requirement.

Very helpful Learning Guide!

I am somewhat acquainted with the guitar, so this book was not unfathomable for me. I'm only into the first part of the book, but so far, for me, it is decipherable. I'm an amateur for sure, but these exercises, coupled with the recorded practice tracks on-line, is just right for me. So, I'm personally very-happy with this learning guide. I would say that this is perfect for someone who is not completely in the dark, when it comes to basic knowledge of the guitar.

In 1910 Mexicans rebelled against an imperfect dictatorship; after 1940 they ended up with what some called the perfect dictatorship. A single party ruled Mexico for over seventy years, holding elections and talking about revolution while overseeing one of the world's most inequitable economies. Force was real, but it was also exercised by the ruled. It went hand-in-hand with consent, produced by resource regulation, political pragmatism, local autonomies and a popular veto. The result was a dictablanda: a soft authoritarian regime.

This deliberately heterodox volume brings together social historians, anthropologists, sociologists, and political scientists to offer a radical new understanding of the emergence and persistence of the modern Mexican state. It also proposes bold, multidisciplinary approaches to critical problems in contemporary politics. With its blend of contested elections, authoritarianism, and resistance, Mexico foreshadowed the hybrid regimes that have spread across much of the globe. Dictablanda suggests how they may endure.

Tiny Tina and Hunter play

This story starts on a cruise ship and then the story follows them home.

Age play is a more difficult storyline so gave 4 stars but the development was iffy at times. For instance, they spend some short hours together and immediately she is comfortable asking for a spanking and having immediate sex.
They go home, have dinner, move in with Hunter pretty soon afterwards.
Exploring relationship...now he loves her and she just knows. There is never any declaration. It implies the same feelings for him. But no declaration.
Finally, things happen, all the same few days for both that change the play and dynamics. But no lead in.
So, because it's hard subject matter to write, I gave four, because of the need for better development, I didn't give a five.

I really liked this book, lots of spanking and hot hot times. I love that she could pretend to be a teenager and that they remained so well adjusted in their relationship. They got along great even though there was a more than 10 years between them. Good age play.

About the Author
Tom Alloway was trained by Winifred Hill at Northwestern University and is an expert in animal behavior, specifically ants, as well as operant and classical conditioning. He's the former chair at UT-Mississauga.

Greg Wilson runs his own software company and created the first version of Sniffy over 10 years ago.

Jeff Graham was trained in cognitive psychology and neural network models of memory. He teaches the computer component of introductory psychology at University of Toronto at Mississauga with over 1500 students per year.

I was not happy with this product at all- it said it would come with the cd, which was what I needed, and only the book came, which is useless.

I ordered this promptly to get the CD-ROM, and I am in need of it it ASAP- as it is a lab for one of my summer classes.
I received the book, however, the CD wasn't included.
