About the Author

GREG GLINER most recently worked at AQR Capital Management on the Global Asset Allocation team and as an analyst at Tudor Investment Corporation, a global macro hedge fund focusing on discretionary macro in equities, commodities, foreign exchange, and fixed income. Prior to this, he was with Thracian Capital (a hedge fund seeded by Man Group PLC/GLG), where he was a Portfolio Manager. Gliner also worked at BNP Paribas in their equity derivatives business and was also with Citigroup's Financial Institution Group in investment banking where he was involved in various M&A, equity, and debt transactions. He holds MBAs from Columbia Business School and London Business School, and has a BS and BA from Miami University (OH) in finance and history.

Gliner pledges all personal profits from the sale of this book to charity.

An interesting, useful and instructive book

There is an ocean of books out there that offer fundamental and technical analysis both for the neophyte and the professional. Usually these books are focused in depth on relatively narrow topics....there is nothing wrong with that.

Mr. Gliner however, offers a wider view in his book, a review of four classes of assets and their inter-relationship. It is clear from the reading, that each one of these assets is affected by the performance of the others on a day-to-day basis. In my view the explanations of the mechanisms of their interdependency is the most valuable contribution of this book. Further, the reader can extract ideas and methods for building a complex portfolio on a global and informed basis, and learn how to rotate between classes of assets to optimize benefit, and manage risk. For all the reasons above, and as it introduces and explains elementary concepts that are then woven into advanced techniques, the book represents an exceptional instructional value that I highly recommend to both the amateur and the professional investors; each one can extract useful and applicable knowledge at their respective level of expertise. Last, but not least, the introduction and summaries presented in each chapter are very useful in reviewing quickly the material covered.

Great practical treatment of difficult material

Gliner's treatment of the material has been both a great introduction to unfamiliar areas and a handy reference source for use in every day trading. Both in-depth and yet still approachable, this book has earned a permanent spot on my book shelf.

Fantastic Book!

I've been a big fan of Greg Gliner for many years. His ability to take the complex subject of Global Macro, distill it down to its most important components, and explain them in a way that provides a deep conceptual understanding is unrivaled. This book covers everything there is to know about the subject and I suspect will be used by aspiring alpha generators for many years. It'll be interesting to see whether this book ends up on the bookshelves of portfolio managers, or tucked into their drawers where they want to secret it away as their own personal treasure trove. My advice to readers is to order two copies, one for yourself, and one to give to your financial advisor to make sure they have the right knowledge to manage your portfolio.

Another Winner from Betty Neels

Nurse Beth Partridge first meets Professor Alexander van Zeust when she literally runs into him while riding her bicycle. After that, it seems like she keeps bumping into him since he is doing some surgery and consulting at the hospital she works at. Beth enjoys their encounters and she has feelings for him that she can't explain. When Alexander offers Beth the chance to go nurse his sister, Martina, who just had her appendix removed and take care of Martina's four young children, Beth jumps at the chance. She's been feeling a bit restless in her job and is tired of living in a cramped apartment with her brother William. She grew up in the country and misses it. Beth realizes that she may see Alex while taking care of Martina and her children and looks forward to their encounters, although she's not sure why. As for Alex, he's old enough to know what he wants and patient enough to wait for Beth to realize what her true feelings are.

"A Star Looks Down" is another delightful romance from Betty Neels. She used one of her basic plot lines - rich, handsome Dutch doctor falls in love with plain, but feisty, English nurse - and did what she did best with that plot line, create an enjoyable, sweet romance. Beth is a nice heroine - a bit put upon by older step brother Philip who basically took her beloved house in the country away from her and by younger brother William who has a habit of borrowing money from her - but very loving and caring. She's so used to being told that she is plain that she doesn't realize how wonderful her hair and eyes are, which makes her an endearing heroine. Professor Alexander Van Zeust is the kind of hero that only exists in Betty Neels novels - a very talented doctor, very rich, owner of several large and beautifully furnished homes in several countries, in love with Beth and willing to take his time until she realizes she is in love with him. The supporting characters are well written. William is a bit selfish, but harmless unlike Phillip who is a true villain; Alexander's sister Martina is a bit spoiled, but a loving mother; and the children are all sweet and adorable, with Dirk, the oldest, the real standout, as he seems to be a real child, with real feelings and faults. The romance between Beth and Alexander is nicely done, but very old-fashioned. Romance readers who want more than chaste kisses between the hero and heroine, won't find it in a Betty Neels book.

She Ran Into Him On Her Way to Work, Literally (5+ stars)

A HELPING HAND AND A KIND HEART - BETH HAD BOTH, BUT WOULD THEY WIN HER LOVE? Professor Alexander van Zeust's sister was ill, and her four young children needed caring for. He asked Beth Partridge - kind, capable, sensible Beth - to take charge of them for a week. She made a splendid job of it, so one week extended to two, and then longer... The professor was happy, the children loved Beth, and their mother knew they were in good hands. Everyone was happy - except Beth. She had fallen in love with her remote employer, but he wasn't likely to be interested in her. She wanted to return to her hospital job, away from all the emotional turmoil, but how when she was needed by the children?

In this "rich good-looking Dutch/British Doctor & plain British Nurse story" Recovery Room Staff Nurse Beth Partridge literally runs into Professor Alexander van Zeust early one morning while trying to report to work on time. They continually meet or are thrown together by chance. An unsuspecting and humble Beth has no idea that "chance" is assisted not by "fate" but by a very patient and determined Alexander. The subtle manner in which he "provides opportunities" to be around her while waiting for her to fall in love with him provides a pleasant, sweet story. To add drama to this story Beth contributes an evil older step-brother and a somewhat selfish younger brother; while Alexander adds a somewhat spoiled sister with a misbehaving, naughty nephew. This is a typical feel-good Betty Neels story that provides a pleasant afternoon read with a few smiles.

As usual this lady delivered another heart warming romance. People love her or hate her, it seems, but her experience and morals shine through each story. They are old fashioned stories and depict a time long gone but are still relevant and enjoyable for this day and age. I have read all her books and will continue to re-read them.l

About the Author

Jack Levin is the Irving and Betty Brudnick Professor of Sociology at Northeastern University. His research interests include, criminology, murder, prejudice and hate, and social psychology. Dr. Levin's other books include The Violence of Hate, Why We Hate, The Will to Kill: Making Sense of Sensleless Murder (with James Alan Fox), and Extreme Killing: Understanding Serial and Mass Murder (with James Alan Fox).

James Alan Fox is the Lipman Family Professorof Criminal Justice and Professor of Law, Policy, and Society at Northeastern University. He is the author or co-author of sixteen books including Will to Kill and Extreme Killing (both with Jack Levin); winner of the 2007 Hugo Adam Bedau Award for excellence in capital punishment scholarship; and a former Visiting Fellow with the Bureau of Justice Statistics of the U.S. Department of Justice.

David Forde is Professor and Graduate Director in the Department of Criminal Justice at the University of Alabama. His principal research activity has been collecting survey and evaluation data on issues of criminal victimization and trauma. Dr. Forde is a current advisor to the National Institute for Law and Equity and a past advisor to the Memphis Shelby Crime Commission on best practices to reduce crime.

Great for early planning

It's a good book and had a lot of info to read over while we were planning our trip. Unfortunately in the day of smart phones we didn't really use this while out in the city as it was easier to look up current review, etc and use the maps on the phone to get around.
Overall, if you have time to plan, get this book early before your trip and use it to help you get an idea of what you want to see and do.

Catalogue, not a city guide.

I am disappointed with this San Francisco guide because it lacks the parts I appreciate the most in other Lonely Planet guides: general introduction the the city, its spirit, its people, the neighborhoods, their atmosphere, personal impressions of the authors. For me, this kind of expert insider knowledge is necessary to hold everything together and to give some sense to the place. This SF city guide did not just cut this kind of content to the bone. It reduced it to almost nothing. What remains is a compilation of top this and that, snippets and sights, anecdotes here and there. More like a catalogue or a phone book.

Does not cover some key topics in sufficient detail

Contains a lot of useful stuff but the sections in chapter 18 on protected mode operation was too short and the accompanying diagrams were a bit skimpy. Having said that, the example code was useful. There was no hard data on virtual 8086 mode and the paging mechanism which is a key feature on 80386 and subsequent processors. Information on how Windows uses the later processors' segmentation, task switching and paging features was notable by its absence. I wish I could find a book that covers this material.

I Wish it Had a Summary of the Techniques

Was pretty good.

But I was looking for something more direct. I liked the book, but I just wish at the end there was a summary of all the techniques and a straightforward methodology for them.

But instead, I am going to have to go thru and create my own summary. The techniques we are told to use he talked about them within stories most of the time, so the direct steps were not right next to each other. I found myself highlighting sentences here and there all over the place trying to capture the actual required steps of the technique.

If anyone has the same problem as me, then I will share my summary that I create with you. To save me emailing out my simple summary to everyone look for the link in the comments section that I left. It took me some time and effort to create this summary. the techniques are stuck all in the middle of STORIES!

Overall the book is good though, don't get me wrong.

There definitely needs to be like a "recipe" book of Eye Exercises created to COMPLIMENT this book, NOT replace it. Because without this book I wouldnt even a) know the techniques or b) understand why I would do them.

JUST WHAT I NEEDED

This book is amazing. I've done some of the exercises and can already read small print without my glasses, and I am 62 in July! I have worn reading glasses for years, and glasses for night driving. I no longer have to do that, and I've been using the book only about 2 weeks. There is such valuable information in the book that I find it hard to put it down. Yes, it takes commitment and time to apply what is set forth in this amazing book, but I don't know of anything in my life that's worthwhile that is instant! If you are wanting to heal your eyes, improve your vision, and strengthen your body by strengthening your eyes, this is definitely the book for you!

A fine recounting of the Bates excercises and the author's life triumph

I read the Bates eyesight literature back in the late sixties, seventies. At that time I incorporated the shifting, swinging, sunning, and palming excercises that are the jewel core of this and the Bates books. Because of these excercises and getting away from the crutches that glasses are, I no longer have a restriction on my driver's license. The author achieved the same thing and even has a picture of his license in the book.

The book covers three primary goals, one is the author's rise from childhood near-blindness, two is the recounting of the Bates excercises along with new interesting Schneider excercises. The third goal is helping those with actual disease or destruction within their eyes.

I found it best to read the book once and then re-read the excercises part.

The one subject that is only lightly mentioned, but that I think is extremely critical, is that glasses only take a short time to become life-long crutches. It doesn't matter how many years I have not worn perscription glasses (or reading glasses), I still have deep mental pulls to 'make sure to bring the glasses' 'do I have the glasses?' 'can I see (whatever) without the glasses?'. It is a sad crime when little children are fitted with glasses, they will spend the rest of their life with neurotic thought processes surrounding eyeglasses and their eyes.

If any of my ramblings here strike any chords within you, I would suggest you continue your studies on this rarely discussed 'science' of natural eyesight maintenance by picking up Meir's book and applying the exercises to your everyday life. It is natural and easy to add these to whatever you do.

About the Author

Irene Deliege obtained her qualifications at the Royal Conservatory of Brussels. After a twenty year career as a music teacher, she retrained in psychology and obtained her PhD in 1991 from the University of Liege where she was responsible for the Unit of Research in Psychology of Music. A founding member of ESCOM, she has acted since its inception as permanent secretary and Editor of the Journal MUSICAE SCIENTIAE. She is the author of several articles and co-edited books dedicated to music perception.

Jane Davidson is the current Callaway/Tunely Chair of Music at the University of Western Australia. She has published extensively within psychology of music with research topics including expressive body movement, collaborative performance, music learning and ability, and singing. Her first academic appointment was at University of Keele between 1991-1993, where she worked as a post-doctoral fellow with John Sloboda and Michael Howe on an innovatory study of the biographical determinants of musical abilities. This led to more than 20 joint peer-reviewed publications.
