About the Author

Brian Goetz has helped students of all levels achieve success in mathematics for sixteen years. As a curriculum specialist for the Grand Rapids Area Precollege Engineering Program, he created numerous materials to motivate and inspire underserved populations. Brian also ran a math learning center at Bay de Noc Community College, where he helped students exceed their expectations of success. Brian has been teaching at Kellogg Community College for eight years. A common thread throughout all his teaching experiences is that an active and supportive environment is needed for students to succeed. With this belief close to his heart, Brian finds working with the other authors to be one of the most rewarding experiences of his career. When he isn’t working, Brian spends quality time with his family and friends, mountain bikes, and kayaks. He dreams of spending a summer kayaking around Lake Superior.

Graham Smith has spent his life immersed in education. He was raised in a family of six teachers, where dinner conversations often centered on public education. Since then, Graham has gained sixteen years of classroom experience, and spent the last 9 years teaching full-time at Kellogg Community College (KCC). The majority of Graham’s professional life has been focused on the education and success of the under-prepared student, which he continues through this work as the Developmental Mathematics Coordinator at KCC. Graham’s substantial training and experience in mathematics and education, as well as his training and certification in developmental education through the Kellogg Institute at Appalachian State University and the National Center for Developmental Education, provide a comprehensive understanding of developmental mathematics. This background and experience provide the author team with a well-developed perspective. In his spare time, Graham enjoys spending time with his wife Amy, catching big fish, playing the guitar, and tinkering with his car that runs on recycled vegetable oil.

Dr. John Tobey currently teaches mathematics at North Shore Community College in Danvers, MA where he has taught for thirty-nine years. Previously Dr. Tobey taught calculus at the United States Military Academy at West Point. He has a doctorate from Boston University and a Master's degree from Harvard. He served as the mathematics department chair for his college for five years. He has authored and co-authored eight college mathematics textbooks with Pearson. He is a past president of New England Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (NEMATYC) and is an active member of the American Mathematics Association of Two Year Colleges (AMATYC). In 1993 Dr. Tobey received the NISOD award for excellence in teaching.

I really like this. It is NOT an easy piano book ...

I really like this. It is NOT an easy piano book -- I've been playing piano for roughly 18 years (caveat: I'm not as good as I should be for playing that long, I can't bust out Mozart or Rachmaninoff and I will probably never be able thanks to an eternal struggle with tiny hands), and I can manage the majority of Disney's sheet music without too much trouble. This is different. The jazz/ragtime/zydeco songs in PoF are quite challenging for anyone not used to playing in that style, but I love it. It's a good piano workout and a lot of fun for anyone patient enough to take it on -- I'm still not great at playing these songs, but I have a blast trying. I think it's a good blend of accompaniment and melody line, although I have to say that I can sing and play the piano, and I've also become adept over the years at playing the vocal line with the left hand when the music decides to drop it out. I'd recommend it for any intermediate player who wanted to give another musical style a shot...it's really different for Disney music. Lots of fun.

The Princess and the Frog score plays well

Randy Newman wrote the music & lyrics for the film and I had enjoyed the music while watching. Mr. Newman has written many scores, but many of his songs are a vocal line with basic chordal accompaniment and I did not enjoy them since I don't sing or transpose very well. I was happy to play through the selections in this book and find that the piano portion supplied the melody and accompaniment very nicely. The film story was set in New Orleans and the music was appropriately jazzy.

Recommended with caveats

If you are not a competent piano player, much of this may be too difficult. You should probably go for the easy piano version instead.

Given that this is a jazz-based score, it is to be expected that it should be difficult using jazzy chords and lots of syncopation. However, the same chords recur in many of the songs, which are mainly in keys with no more than on sharp or flat. Just one song in e-flat and one in a-flat. The piano pieces are excellent training for someone looking to move from a competent level of classical style playing to a New Orleans style. It's more Dr. John, who appears on the recording, he's singing the first song, than Fats Domino.

The book opens easily and stays on the page you open it to, which is a problem for lots of written music that is not spiral bound.

The music has been carefully, tastefully and accurately transcribed. Highly recommended with the above caveats.

I would recommend it for competent pianists, but not for the solo guitarist.

Outstanding!

I thought Reaper's Inc. - Brigit's Cross was fantastic, but the sequel, Reaper's Inc. - Rogue Reaper is astounding! Every page evokes an emotional response and keeps the reader glued to the story. B.L. Newport has a flair of writing that makes the action jump off of the page where the reader can see the action. Great read. There aren't enough stars to rate this one. I can't wait for the next one!!!

The Reaper's return

Brigit Malone is carrying out her position of Assistant Grim Reaper efficiently and to the very best of her ability. The threat made by Seamus Flannery nine months previously has not been carried out........Yet. Brigit is under no illusions though, that he is just biding his time to get to her in a weak moment.

John Blackwick has left Brigit in charge as Head Reaper while he opens up satellite offices round the world. Brigit is working round the clock crossing souls and trying her best to run the office. She can't even get home very often to spend time with her beloved Maggie.

The Bailey is acting up and the work load due to his increased activity is never ending. Brigit also has to face a ghost she'd rather not face from her past. Then the unthinkable happens, Seamus shows his hand at last. He has found a way to carry out his threat to Brigit. He is going after the one person Brigit would give up her immortal soul for. Will Seamus succeed in destroying Brigit?

Reapers Inc Brigit's Cross was a superb book. This second in the series is even better, if that's possible.

The characters are diverse and multidimensional. As the firm of Reapers Inc grows, so we meet more characters. Some nicer than others. But they all pull their own weight in progressing the story along at a nice pace, with twists and turns along the way.

It's fascinating to read about the dead interacting with the living. This series is giving me a whole new perception of a genre previously either ignored or read by those considered ghoulish. Personally, although I know these things can't and don't happen, a part of me wonders, what if.........

B.L Newport has a unique way with words. Her storytelling just makes me want to read more from her. She has created a wonderful set of characters, even when I'm not reading a Reapers Inc book, I'm thinking about them.

If anyone is unsure as to whether they will like the series, just buy the first book. The price is very reasonable too.

wonderful sequel of post-urban fantasy

ok - there I thought Brigit's Cross couldn't be topped and duh, the sequel is even better than the first book if that's possible. Newport expands her story on the post mortem part of urban fantasy in a totally delightful way and her characters are ever so vivid (pun intended). The story is exceptional and again I found myself looking for the sequel asap!
BTW the proofreading was again atrocious.

Fluid Mechanics (Dover Classics of Science and Mathematics)

This is an excellent book on Fluid Mechanics. It covers all the important topics that both students and practitioners are likely to encounter. Notably, the structure of the book is very logical in that it starts with the fundermentals upon which the more advanced topics are successively built. Three key features of this book are especially outstanding: 1) provision of many worked examples through out the book, 2) provision of many illustrations, including photographs, and 3) provision of problems for the reader to solve at the end of each chapter.

The most notable shortcoming of this book is the fact that it does not use SI units, which are used by many countries. This is a disadvantage as far as international readers are concerned. That is not in the case for USA readers, which is probably the target market for the book. All in all, it is a 5-star book.

This book has been used by several universities and adopted as the course text for several years by the US Naval Academy. It is written to strengthen student's background in applied math, and has many clever example problems. The degree of difficulty is slightly greater than most other texts on the subject but it is justified in that the aim is to improve student's math prowess.

Tall and mysterious, raven-haired Kalli is Maldinga's secret keeper. Villagers come to her forest home to tell her their shameful secrets, which are transformed into objects that Kalli stores in the drawers that line her cottage. The villagers go away "a little lighter of heart," but Kalli is so weighed down by their revelations that she eventually takes to her bed. It's the blacksmith who comes up with the fine idea of sharing good secrets, which include a whispered declaration from the potter's handsome son: "I love the secret-keeper." All is repaired a little too quickly, but children won't mind too much; they'll likely be captivated by the warm tones of Solomon's paintings, framed in round or rectangular borders, and by Kalli and her fellow Maldingans, their eyes shining with alertness and intelligence as they live harmoniously with nature. Daily the people of the village come through the woods to Kalli's house to tell their guilty secrets, which she hides away in the hundreds of wooden drawers that line the walls of her cottage, like apothecary cases or library catalog cabinets. Only one person, Taln, the potter, does not come to visit. As fall turns to winter, the secrets begin to weigh heavily on Kalli, and she becomes ill. When a young girl discovers her, the villagers attempt a cure by sharing some happy secrets. After a child tells his secret, a blue butterfly flies from Kalli's hands. As the villagers share good secrets with Kalli and with each other, Kalli recovers and spring returns. Then Taln whispers his secret: "I love the secret-keeper." Solomon's lovely watercolors, framed with jewel-toned borders, varied in size, shape and placement on heavy creamy paper, add fascinating details and emotional depth to this gentle jewel of a tale that will prompt discussion on the sharing of secrets, good and bad. The Power of Happy Secrets

This is a refreshing tale, perfectly illustrated. My copy of The Secret Keeper has already been loaned and read aloud to intrigued school children. The story produced plenty of curiosity, compassion for Kalli the Secret Keeper, and good discussion.

Kate Coombs has a talent for delightful invention. It's not surprising that a dishonest baker, an irresponsible match maker, or many another burdened villager would feel some relief after Kalli has heard one of their guilty secrets. But readers may be surprised to learn what fittingly symbolic objects the secrets turn into in Kalli's magical hands.

This delightful tale is not just about the burdens of the confidante or counselor; it's about how a community comes to broaden its understanding of secret-sharing. In a crisis, the villagers' decency and love emerge. What about telling their very ill Kalli "bright and fair secrets, like a spring morning"? The secrets told in this part of the story (and the butterflies and other beauteous things they turn into) are wonderfully simple and touching. This is where The Secret Keeper becomes a story of honesty and love, and really gains its gentle power.

The dust jacket says Kate Coombs' first book is for readers "4 to 8", but this is a fine book for older children, too, and parents and other adults--perhaps, especially, those in the helping professions.

Refreshingly fabulous

I had the honor to read a review copy of The Secret Keeper and it is one of my all-time favorite books. I predict that you will be hearing a lot more about Kate Coombs and her books.

The Secret Keeper reads like a fast-paced traditional folk tale. I loved the wry humor and the subtle lessons.

4 1/2 Shouldn't Have Took More Than You Gave"

"The Secret-Keeper" is a sort of child's version of Nathaniel West's masterpiece, "Miss Lonely Hearts," in which a "helper" is similarly overcome by the demands of those needing help. Of course, as a kids' book, the tone is far lighter and the outcome happier, but they share a theme about the burden of receiving confession.

In a beautifully designed and illustrated medieval/hobbit-like setting, long-haired, quiet "Kalli" welcomes men and women of all ages to tell her their secrets. Some secrets seem relatively innocent ("A plain girl loved a handsome boy and dared not tell him"), some, not so (A bribe induces a matchmaker to makes a bad match), but all of them feel heavy to those who hide them. The magical proceedings, the slightly moralistic tone, and the appearance of hero and heroine give this a classic fairy tale aura, and the arched and rectangular framed pictures (done in lush, ornate design with watercolor, oil, and collage) recall the prototypical illustrations of N.C. Wyeth and other early masters. It's truly a gorgeous book.

The plot revolves around Kalli's unselfish generosity, and how it almost overwhelms her. However, the author doesn't clearly establish Kalli's secret-collecting method, causing some initial unnecessary confusion. "Shed," the baker, admits that he cheats when he weighs his customers' bread. In exchange for her confession taking..."He gave Kalli a basket of fresh rolls and a copper coin." When Kalli hears his secret, she "nodded and caught his words in his hand." Now comes the confusing part: "After Shed trudged away with a sigh, Kalli opened her hand again. Shed's secret was a small grey rock, like a stale breadcrumb. Kalli went inside and tucked the secret into one of the tiny drawers that lines the walls of her cottage.

After a few of these exchanges, it's clear that Kalli has the ability to transform the secret into a concrete object, something that can be stored away. However, author Coombs uses a metaphor, "Shed's secret was a small grey rock," something too abstract for concrete-thinking kids. It's also unfortunate that Ms. Coombs compares the rock to a "stale bread crumb" --did Shed cheat by somehow inserting the small rock into his loaves? A simple and clearer presentation might have been something like, "Kalli took his secret and turned it into a small grey rock." All this becomes clearer after a few more examples, but adult readers might want to supplement the text with gestures or some ready explanations if questioned.

Kalli's transformative powers, while itself a metaphor, also drives the plot. As she collects more and more secrets, changing them into small drab objects, she becomes sick. Slowly the villagers realize that they take much more from the secluded woman than any gold piece cold buy. When they discover her sick in bed, they realize that one can also tell Good Secrets, not just bad ones. As they tell her (it's all very rapid, like townspeople in a Jimmy Stewart movie: "...my husband helps folks." "I married my own true love." "I made up a song," "My mama and I dance in the meadow"), Kalli's strength and spirit begins to return. She takes each of these good secrets and changes them into objects--but beautiful, magical objects: A dragonfly, a rainbow, a meadowlark, and more all emanate from Kalli's hand, all revealed in a series of pictures that resemble tapestries. And, speaking of her hand, the quiet potter's son tells the last secret to the now healthy Kalli: "I love the secret keeper." Some toddlers and early elementary schoolers will love this touching, sentimental romance, others may not be ready for it--know your audience. I enjoyed it, and it's followed by a blissful celebration in the meadow, so idyllic and light that you half expect the love to lift the villagers into the air.

In fact, versions of the same stories told in wizarding households would shock many for their uncharitable treatment of their Muggle characters.

Professor Dumbledore also includes fascinating historical backstory, including tidbits such as the history and pursuit of magic wands, a brief comment on the Dark Arts and its practitioners, and the struggles with censorship that eventually led "a certain Beatrix Bloxam" to cleanse the Tales of "much of the darker themes that she found distasteful," forever altering the meaning of the stories for their Muggle audience. Dumbledore also allows us a glimpse of his personal relationship to the Tales, remarking that it was through "Babbity Rabbity and Her Cackling Stump" that "many of us [wizards] first discovered that magic could not bring back the dead."

There is no easy way to define the experience of seeing, holding, or reading J.K. Rowling's The Tales of Beedle the Bard, so let's just start with one word: "Whoa." The very fact of its existence (an artifact pulled straight out of a novel) is magical, not to mention the facts that only seven copies exist in all the world and each of the never-before-told tales is handwritten and illustrated by J.K. Rowling herself (and it's quite clear from the first few pages that she has some skill as an artist). Rowling's handwriting is like the familiar scrawl of a favorite aunt--it's not hard to read, but it does require attention--allowing you to take it slow and savor the mystery of each next word.

So how do you review one of the most remarkable tomes you've ever had the pleasure of opening? You just turn each page and allow yourself to be swept away by each story. You soak up the simple tales that read like Aesop's fables and echo the themes of the series; you follow every dip and curve of Rowling's handwriting and revel in every detail that makes the book unique--a slight darkening of a letter here, a place where the writing nearly runs off the page there. Why We Love Harry: Our Favorite Moments from the Series
There are plenty of reasons to love Rowling's wildly popular series--no doubt you have several dozen of your own. Our list features favorite moments, characters, and artifacts from the first five books. Keep in mind that this list is by no means exhaustive (what we love about Harry could fill ten books!) and does not include any of the spectacular revelatory moments that would spoil the books for those (few) who have not read them. Enjoy.

Harry Potter and the Sorcerer's Stone
* Harry's first trip to the zoo with the Dursleys, when a boa constrictor winks at him.
* When the Dursleys' house is suddenly besieged by letters for Harry from Hogwarts. Readers learn how much the Dursleys have been keeping from Harry. Rowling does a wonderful job in displaying the lengths to which Uncle Vernon will go to deny that magic exists.
* Harry's first visit to Diagon Alley with Hagrid. Full of curiosities and rich with magic and marvel, Harry's first trip includes a trip to Gringotts and Ollivanders, where Harry gets his wand (holly and phoenix feather) and discovers yet another connection to He-Who-Must-No-Be-Named. This moment is the reader's first full introduction to Rowling's world of witchcraft and wizards.
* Harry's experience with the Sorting Hat.

Harry Potter and the Chamber of Secrets
* The de-gnoming of the Weasleys' garden. Harry discovers that even wizards have chores--gnomes must be grabbed (ignoring angry protests "Gerroff me! Gerroff me!"), swung about (to make them too dizzy to come back), and tossed out of the garden--this delightful scene highlights Rowling's clever and witty genius.
* Harry's first experience with a Howler, sent to Ron by his mother.
* The Dueling Club battle between Harry and Malfoy. Gilderoy Lockhart starts the Dueling Club to help students practice spells on each other, but he is not prepared for the intensity of the animosity between Harry and Draco. Since they are still young, their minibattle is innocent enough, including tickling and dancing charms.

Harry Potter and the Prisoner of Azkaban
* Ron's attempt to use a telephone to call Harry at the Dursleys'.
* Harry's first encounter with a Dementor on the train (and just about any other encounter with Dementors). Harry's brush with the Dementors is terrifying and prepares Potter fans for a darker, scarier book.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's behavior in Professor Trelawney's Divination class. Some of the best moments in Rowling's books occur when she reminds us that the wizards-in-training at Hogwarts are, after all, just children. Clearly, even at a school of witchcraft and wizardry, classes can be boring and seem pointless to children.
* The Boggart lesson in Professor Lupin's classroom.
* Harry, Ron, and Hermione's knock-down confrontation with Snape.

Harry Potter and the Goblet of Fire
* Hermione's disgust at the reception for the veela (Bulgarian National Team Mascots) at the Quidditch World Cup. Rowling's fourth book addresses issues about growing up--the dynamic between the boys and girls at Hogwarts starts to change. Nowhere is this more plain than the hilarious scene in which magical cheerleaders nearly convince Harry and Ron to jump from the stands to impress them.
* Viktor Krum's crush on Hermione--and Ron's objection to it.
* Malfoy's "Potter Stinks" badge.
* Hermione's creation of S.P.E.W., the intolerant bigotry of the Death Eaters, and the danger of the Triwizard Tournament. Add in the changing dynamics between girls and boys at Hogwarts, and suddenly Rowling's fourth book has a weight and seriousness not as present in early books in the series. Candy and tickle spells are left behind as the students tackle darker, more serious issues and take on larger responsibilities, including the knowledge of illegal curses.

Harry Potter and the Order of the Phoenix

* Harry's outburst to his friends at No. 12 Grimmauld Place. A combination of frustration over being kept in the dark and fear that he will be expelled fuels much of Harry's anger, and it all comes out at once, directly aimed at Ron and Hermione. Rowling perfectly portrays Harry's frustration at being too old to shirk responsibility, but too young to be accepted as part of the fight that he knows is coming.
* Harry's detention with Professor Umbridge. Rowling shows her darker side, leading readers to believe that Hogwarts is no longer a safe haven for young wizards. Dolores represents a bureaucratic tyrant capable of real evil, and Harry is forced to endure their private battle of wills alone.
* Harry and Cho's painfully awkward interactions. Rowling clearly remembers what it was like to be a teenager.
* Harry's Occlumency lessons with Snape.
* Dumbledore's confession to Harry.

Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince

* The introduction of the Horcrux.
* Molly Weasley asking Arthur Weasley about his "dearest ambition. "Rowling has always been great at revealing little intriguing bits about her characters at a time, and Arthur’s answer "to find out how airplanes stay up" reminds us about his obsession with Muggles.
* Harry's private lessons with Dumbledore, and more time spent with the fascinating and dangerous pensieve, arguably one of Rowling’s most ingenious inventions.
* Fred and George Weasley’s Joke Shop, and the slogan: "Why Are You Worrying About You-Know-Who? You Should Be Worrying About U-NO-POO--the Constipation Sensation That's Gripping the Nation!"
* Luna's Quidditch commentary. Rowling created scores of Luna Lovegood fans with hilarious and bizarre commentary from the most unlikely Quidditch commentator.
* The effects of Felix Felicis.

Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows

* The revelation of Snape's nature (especially Snape’s Patronus and the emotion behind it). It serves as a reminder that it is love (requited or not) in all its forms that drives many of our actions.
* Harry asking if the conversation with Dumbledore was real or happening in his head, and Dumbledore responding "Of course it is happening inside your head, Harry, but why on earth should that mean that it is not real?"
* Ron gifting Harry a book on dating witches, a subtle reminder that they are still teens, after all.

Grade 4 Up—Muggles grow up with Grimm's fairy tales; wizarding children grow up with Tales of Beedle the Bard. The Bard's book is a collection of five tales, bequeathed to Hermione Granger by Professor Dumbledore. The passing of the book into her hands was intended to be both "entertaining and instructive." As in all good mysteries, information contained within its pages provided Hermione with clues essential to helping Harry in the series' last installment. In particular, "The Tale of Three Brothers" describes how three magical items appeared after siblings cleverly cheat death. It is these items that play a pivotal role in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows (Scholastic, 2007). Those hoping to re-create the hours of pleasure spent curled up with a J.K. It is easy to be cynical about The Tales of Beedle the Bard. Harry Potter fans may see it as a inadequate substitute for the delayed release of the film version of Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, and Muggles—you ordinary, nonmagical humans—may wonder why another Hogwarts book is necessary, even if one of the stories in this collection, "The Tale of the Three Brothers," plays an important role in the final battle between Harry and Voldemort (in Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows). But critics found much in this book for even nonfans to admire—from the subtle moral messages of the tales to the voice which Rowling allows to emerge in the tongue-in-cheek commentaries. A few critics commented that the collection lacks Rowling's usual charm and originality, but most fans will be happy to have a few more moments with Dumbledore.

My only complaint: I wanted more

If you love the Harry Potter series, then this is a must-have. It arrived in the mail yesterday, and I devoured it right away. And that's my only complaint: it's brevity. It's a short, quick read. But a fun one.
And it's not simply a handful of fairy tales from the wizarding world. The commentary by Albus Dumbledore on each story was a really nice touch, in some cases even more entertaining to me than the stories themselves.
If you were expecting a thick book that would absorb you for hours as the Harry Potter series did, I hope you're not disappointed in this book's brevity. It's still worth the price if you enjoy the series, and it supports a charitable cause.
If you've never read the Harry Potter books (or seen the movies, I suppose) then do NOT consider this a sample of the series. You will not glean any sense of the depth, quality and, as everyone else calls it, the magic of the Harry Potter world. This book is a tasty dessert to those who've feasted on the seven-course series.

Pretty Good

The book was decent, in a cutesy kind of way. It is a very quick read -- somewhere around 100 pages. Being in my twenties, I think I was probably a little older than the intended audience. I would recommend this book to anyone who enjoyed the Harry Potter series, but with one caveat: Don't get your hopes up too high. It's good and provides some insight into "The Deathly Hallows," but it's no Harry Potter.

The Collectors Edition is a Must Have

A short while ago I opened my door to find a large package from Amazon: I could not believe it was actually my copy of The Collectors Edition of the Tales of Beedle the Bard! While I first ordered this a while ago, there was a problem with my credit card and I had to reorder, so I did not think I would get this book at all, much less on the relealse date! Thank you Amazon, I don't know how you do it!

The book is an absolutely must have for every Harry Potter fan. I had already read the tales themselves when I opened this volume, and they are truly delightful and full of wonderful messages for our children (and for all the magic lovers among us). The stories aside, this edition is truly beautiful and a pleasure to hold in one's hand. There are some wonderful and unique features to it -- the set of reprints is just beautiful; the small book inside the velvet bag inside the larger volume makes you feel like you are opening a treasure and indeed you are!

I bought this volume for my son for a Christmas present, but now I'm thinking, maybe I will need another one! It is well worth the money to own such a special item, and it makes it that much greater that a portion of the proceeds goes to Ms. Rowling's incredible charity. I know the holidays are going to be very special in my house. Thank you Ms. Rowling, for yet another gift to your legions of fans.
