Love that I can play things that sound like the classics

I have minimal piano playing skills, am an adult teaching myself.

I hate using the beginner's books with songs like "Mr. Turtle goes slow" or "The Blue Coyote." One, I have no idea if what I am am playing sounds right and well, they're childish.

So, I love that these are simple enough for me to attempt (not all are easy, but I'm working my skills up)and I can tell if I'm getting them to sound right (if I haven't heard the song I can youtube it. About 80% of the songs I can hear someone play although sometimes if the chosen selection is not the opening theme of the song I have difficulty finding it). Plus it's "grown up."

Definitely one of my favorite easy level books.

Excellent for What It Aspires To Be

I read many of the reviews here and wasn't sure if this book was what I was looking for. Would it be "too easy"? "Too hard"? "Too short?" "Too simplified"? Or, as many said, perfect for his/ her level.

Fortunately, for me it turned out to be just what I was looking for. But I do understand how difficult choosing the right level could be. This says it's a "Beginner's" book--not an "Intermediate's"--and I think that's right. You should be able to read music two octaves up from middle "C" and one octave below, but the base is simple--usually one or two notes at a time, many slow selections and almost every song is in the key of C or F.

Even as someone who doesn't sight read well, I can play the pieces from the beginning with both hands--slowly. This is a good level for me--feels very "doable" but also a challenge as my practices begin rather haltingly. I feel my sight reading is improving because the notation doesn't overwhelm a beginner with too many notes at a time.

Some people were frustrated that the pieces were short excerpts of classics--1-3 pages of music. (The notes are nice and large, by the way, which I found very helpful) For me, I really liked the shortness of the pieces because the easiest ones made good warmups and, since I don't sight read well, I appreciated the variety of options. Three pieces I recommend that I enjoyed and feel are among the easier ones are:

"Chopin's Nocturne in E flat" (arranged to be in C ). It has part of the accompaniment in the treble clef and part with bass so, while its simple bass and melody lines, it's good "thinking exercise" to switch between them as you play. Plus, it's a slow, pretty piece, nice to warmup with. Another good one for beginners (like me) is "Brahms Lullaby". And I liked "The Waltz of the Sugar Plum Fairy", too.

Nice variety--9 from Bach, 8 from Beethoven, 7 Chopin, 9 Mozart, 8 Tchaikovsky plus 1 or 2 each from Bartok, Brahms, Clementi, Debussy, Dvorak, Foster, Gluck, Grieg, Handel, Haydn, Liszt, MacDowell, Mendelsohn, Moussorgsky, Paderewski, Rameau, Rachmaninoff, Rubinstein, Saint-Saens, Satie, Scarlatti, Schubert, Schumann, Scriabin, Sibelius, Strauss,Verdi, Vivaldi, and Wagner. A very nice variety--good as a refresher (many were familiar but not by name and someI -should- have known, but didn't).

There are also little "factoids" above each piece--a few sentences of interesting information about the music or the composer. Fingering suggestions are also included. I found this a very motivating and enjoyable book at my beginning level and great for warmups/improving sight reading in a pleasurable way.

OK very simple arrangements, good exercising value for a "middle-stage" beginner

These are significantly simplified short excerpts from classical masterpieces. If you want something longer and otherwise closer to the original, look elsewhere.
On the other hand, this book may work for beginners who want to supplement their technique development with musically meaningful exercises (often based on well-known classical melodies). It is probably way too much for early beginners and too little for "advanced beginners".

The Pooh Perplex

I first read The Pooh Perplex in the summer before my freshman year of college; my father presented it to me as an encapsulation of the reasons why he had abandoned his English major. I had not yet encountered Leavis, Crane, and the other critics so marvelously parodied in Crews's book, but I spent a good few hours shrieking with laughter at Myron Masterson's vision of Kanga as castrating "'Mom' figure" and Simon Lacerous's characterization of the bear himself as a flabby old Tory with a string of knightly titles and an overfondness for condensed milk.

Then I came to college and took a Literary Criticism and Theory class; with wonder, I recognized in my casebook more and more of the bizarre characters inhabiting Crews's topsy-turvy hermeneutic milieu. Oddest of all, I found that my reading of The Pooh Perplex had actually provided me with a fairly solid overview of structuralism, Marxist theory, and other critical concoctions my professor obliged me to imbibe. And when I gave Crews's work a second reading, I discovered a myriad of hilarities that had previously passed me by.

Though it is depressing that Crews's zany satire can help a student of literature grasp the principal critical theories of the past fifty years, I disagree with my father's justification for forsaking his major. Many critics unintentionally self-parody; to endure their bombast, the reader must absorb the good, dismiss the inane, and find in the ludicrous a scrap or two of humor. Fortunately, we have Crews to assist us with that last task. Satire is a dying art; read The Pooh Perplex to understand why it is still necessary.

Brilliant and funny

It was probably the publication of Postmodern Pooh, Frederick Crews's second venture into Pooh studies, that explains the renewed availability of The Pooh Perplex more than 40 years after its first appearance. But whatever the reason, it is an excellent thing that modern readers can get hold of it, both because it is a brilliant and witty book in itself and also because it makes a natural companion for Postmodern Pooh.

For those who have not met the book before it should be explained that it is a series of parodies of different styles of literary criticism (those that were fashionable in the 1960s) applied to Winnie-the-Pooh and The House at Pooh Corner, collected together as a "case book" of the kind that was then popular for elementary English courses, and accompanied by Questions and Study Projects prepared by the editor, ostensibly Crews himself, but in reality as much of a parody as the articles themselves.

No doubt one would need to be familiar already with the parodied styles to get the most from the book, but no matter; one can get a great deal of amusement from it without any specialist knowledge, and some of the sources are fairly obvious even to non-specialists, the Freudian analysis by "Karl Anschauung", for example, or the proletarian analysis by "Martin Tempralis". On the other hand, readers born since the book was written may not easily recognize F. R. Leavis thinly disguised as "Simon Lacerous".

The non-specialist reader will easily be tempted to believe that Crews is exaggerating. Surely no serious expert on English literature could really express some of the sillier ideas expressed in this book? Alas, he amply demonstrates with real quotations from real (and apparently serious) publications that they could and they did.

Keep You In Confusion

Frederick Crews made his name back in 1963 with this punchy, sardonic parody of academic self-importance. Over 45 years later, it retains its power to cut to the quick. Though not laugh-out-loud hilarious, it has a wit that exposes truth to the light of day. Though it goes on a bit longer than is actually necessary to prove its point, it remains a reminder to those of us who work with words and ideas of why we need to be humble.

In his facetious introduction, Crews tells eager freshman that this book "is frankly designed to keep you in confusion." Since too many freshman texts to exactly that, this take is all too just. The satirical articles then go on to deflate the most pompous mid-century literary critics, including Lacan, Bloom, and Eliot. Some of the references may be dated, but even if we don't recognize all of Crews' individual targets, we know the type.

The paradoxical aspect is that this book could almost be used to teach how to do criticism correctly. By mocking what the various schools do wrong to make themselves ridiculous, Crews also shows how they can be made communicative and useful. That being the case, every English major should have a copy of this book thrust into their hands. Literate and dense, but readable and funny, this is a must for all of us working in the humanities.

Turned me into an expert in one week.

This took me from zero to hero in Cyberlink in 1 week. I'm quite handy with computers, and had used iMovie and Windows Movie Maker many times before purchasing Cyberlink Powerdirector 13. However, the learning curve for this program is steep compared to these simpler programs. I tried googling tips and watching a few youtubes, but nothing was giving me the overview I needed. This book did a great job. It's well organized and does not need to be read cover to cover. You can read the first few chapters then just skip around as you need to learn things.

This book makes learning sign language very easy. You do have to practice, but it comes back pretty quickly for me when it has been a while. The only thing that gets me is in some of the extra practice there are words/signs that weren't covered in the chapter. That is why I only gave it 4 stars, Overall the book is great and makes learning sign language fun.

Makes Learning ASL for Varied Learning Needs Easy

There is a group of three of us with one whose ASL need will be of extreme importance in years coming. He is called a "highly functioning autistic" working with "coach" for developmentally challenged. He has two cochlea implants. Whatever the level, this book is well illustrated, attractive and leads in steps with review pages of materials covered in each chapter. I have worked with another book that had been the best for years. This book makes learning ASL fun.

This is the first book I have purchased (and I have about half a dozen books on sign language) that actually gives the learner practice in READING signs. I also like the notes at the bottom of the page that serve as a kind of thesaurus (other words that are signed in the same or almost the same way). I highly recommend this book to people who are learning sign language.

Use this Book for Architecture 101

This version of Vers une architecture translation in English is far superior to all others used in Architecture 101. The images alone are worth the book. Also, the book is nicely sized for visual clarity. Had I known, I'd have recommended this book for my Arch101 class. Of course, it was not printed when I did my Arch101 a few years back and used one that was all text and awful.

The book is well designed and uses what the content teaches upon itself.
