I highly recommend this book

Very on point, very thorough. This book is written by a scholar who set out to prove that the Christian Faith was wrong, and ended up becoming a Christian himself, so it is very convincing. It covers a lot of philosophy and logic, so just forgive yourself if you do not understand every last word. I often have to read paragraphs several times and look up certain words on Google to be able to follow it all. But it is the ultimate book on how to defend the Christian Faith, so I just read a little bit of it as a compliment every time I read the Bible. I figure it will help my Christian growth as long as it is part of my Bible study and not used instead of Bible study. I highly recommend this book.

Atheist, Agnostic, Carnal, or Spirit-Filled, waivering faith, a Must for your Library

This will be my fourth purchase of THE NEW EVIDENCE THAT DEMANDS A VERDICT. My first purchase was for Evidence that Demands a Verdict, period. My second purchase, the one I currently use, was the publications combined and sold under the name, "The New" Evidence that Demands a Verdict. The third I purchased as a memorial for a church library in memory of a good friend who is with the Lord. And, today, I am making my fourth purchase for a good friend battling cancer, who is far more Spirit-Filled than I ever will be. Every home should have a well-worn, used copy of God's word, which we typically refer to as the Bible. While I have a small library of "Bibles," they are of no good unless read. Most of mine are for various translations, a few are for Bible studies, and the remainder for research, study, and ones I can take notes in and highlight. This is not a "stand alone" book. It is meant to be used with your Bible. And, there are parts of this book, that are not easy reading, and requires higher level thinking skills. Regardless of your "reading level," comprehension, or education, Josh McDowell continues to put together in one easy to find source (bound book) the questions, answers, and historical foundation for our Christian Faith. If I was an atheist or agnostic, I would have this book as one of my references to know what I must overcome to continue to deny the Holy Spirit and the historical person, Jesus Christ. Regardless of our religion, whether we attend church or not, our belief in a Supreme Being, the ultimate question for man/woman despite his or her ethnicity, creed, religion is the question: What to do about the person who walked the face of this earth nearly 2000+ years ago? We all make decisions on our life's journey. And, whether consciously or not, the majority of us are faced with "What to do about Jesus?" This book is that and much more. It is a well-documented history of faith and philosophy and one of the best references in my opinion that any person can have in their library when those questions of faith come up.

Six months after the memorial gift to a Presbyterian church library of a large Presbyterian church, my gift to my friend with the acknowledgement of how much he had meant to me in the few years I had known him, had not been acknowledged. Upon contacting the church library, they indicated they had not received the book and therefore had not inventoried it in the church library. Back tracking, Amazon dot Com's records should the book had been shipped and received by the church. What happened to the book?

I never received a proper answer to that question. I have some ideas about the matter. THE NEW EVIDENCE THAT DEMANDS A VERDICT is not heresy and should not cause a schism in any believing individual or denomination. Shortly after my inquiry, the acknowledgements came. I hope the individual or individuals who withheld this wonderful reference from the church library were blessed by their readings by the Holy Spirit, strengthening their faith, in those areas where there are doubts, and if the reader was a none believer, hopefully his or her questions have been answered and that now they are a part of the body of Christ.

Must Have Reference Book

"The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict Fully Updated to Answer the Questions Challenging Christians Today" is an excellent reference book for conservative Christians everywhere. Josh McDowell deals with Christianity based upon historical facts. The citations used cannot be refuted as they are written by secular schollars, all of whom have been reknowned and accepted throughout these past centries. "New Evidence...," also deals with liberal Christian theological issues. He presents the Liberal position with their evidence; then looks at each piece of their evidence with the same positions from a logical, evidentual perspective.
Josh McDowell is a college profesor who started his original work "Evidence That Demands a Verdict" with the purpose of exposing Christianity as a "fraud". However, when he finished his work he found that Christianity was not fraudulant but was a factually based faith. Those facts, and much more, were included in "The New Evidence That Demands a Verdict Fully Updated to Answer The Questions Challenging Christians Today." This is a book that needs to be in the Conservative Christian's library.

Molly needs her own voice and personality

Like others who have and will purchase this collection, I bought the volume specifically to find out what happened to Molly. In the short story written by Jim Butcher, Molly learns what is expected of her as the Winter Queen.

I really did not like this story. Molly has no voice of her own, her wit, her thought processes are all Harry Dresden. Who is mentioned over and over and over again, ad nauseum. Don't get me wrong, I like Harry. And I liked Molly when she wasn't such a Harry knock off. Butcher fails when it comes to female protagonists, particularly when describing sexual arousal. Hey Jim, women don't think about sex the same way men do. It's not a matter of how often they think about it or how big their libido is - it's DIFFERENT for us. Butcher portrays almost every trait Molly has as a mirror image of Harry. It's so distracting that the plot fizzled and died for me before I finished page 39 in the Kindle edition.

Tanya Hufff, Seanan McGuire, and Rob Thurman have work included in this compilation. They are solid writers (as is Butcher, usually) and their stories do not disappoint. I was less familar with the other writers included; for the most part, I am pleased with my introduction to these people and will look for more of their work.

I'd really like to rate this as 3.5 stars, but that isn't possible on Amazon. Overall, a decent grouping of short stories.

Overall this is a good anthology

Overall this is a good anthology. Review by story:

1. Cold Case. 5/5
It's a good story even if it does have some continuity snarls. It helps show some of the ways Molly has changed now that she is Winter Lady.

2. Sleepover. 6/5
This story is the surprise MVP for me. I have never read anything my Seanan Mcguire but after reading Sleepover i have ordered a few of her “InCryptid” books. Now to the actual story; it's very well paced with a whole lot of world building hooks which allow the story to seem like it actually inhabits a real setting. The characters are likable and the plot relies more on the characters then on flash or fighting.

3. If Wishes Were. 3/5
The story is a little bit cliche. The main character seems somewhat overpowered to me. i will admit the story did not interest me enough to research if it takes place in a larger setting where the character would be justified to be as powerful as it is. Other than that, the mains love interest is flat, the initial antagonist seems like just an excuse to start the plot. And finally, the main antagonist while being extremely powerful (for reasons, and in a way, that makes way more sense then the main character) it is still defeated without difficulty via deus ex machina.

4. Solus. 3/5
Simple description? Men in Black meets The Dresden Files. Only problem is, it feels like you're following around the B team from either setting. It's a bit wacky mixed with “Magic A is Magic A”.

5. Peacock in Hell. 4/5
This one is a weird one to go into without any prior knowledge. It's like someone took “Bartimaeus Sequence” series of books and gave it a pack of cigarettes to make it more “edgy”. Don't get me wrong it's done well, but it seems like it's trying a bit too hard to by grown up when it's not. Also, maybe placing this story right after the wacky story in the anthology might not have been the best place for it as far as tone is concerned.

6. Eye of newt. 1/5
Nope. I got through 4 pages of cringe and decided this story is not for me.

7. What dwells within 2/5
Who doesn't like a telepathic Ferret as a main character…. Me it turns out. I am guessing this story is part of a larger series but it does a really bad example of getting a new person involved with the setting.

8. Hunter healer 4/5
This story reads like a “day in the limelight” for a background NPC. It has good execution, and when read from the point of view that it's a minor character getting some development the story is good.

9. Baggage. 5/5
This one is good, even if it is ostensibly about superheroes. Sadly it is not part of a larger series instead the author has floated the characters/setting out on a few anthologies and is planning on trying to make it a comic if there is enough interest. It's a bit modern noir mixed with a thriller.

10. Sales. Force. 4/5
This story is good, but if it was a full book it would probably outstay its welcome. The main character is a monster, not in the literal sense but rather she is a psychopathic killer with little regard to normal human characterization. That kind of amoral killer that is sometimes fun to see in limited, Controlled, settings along the lines of “yes, but she’s OUR monster”. That being said there doesn't seem to be much in the terms of control or humanization here.

11. Impossible monsters 5/5
THIS is how you do an amoral psychopathic killer right. This is a monster aimed at other monsters. It also part of a larger series “cal leandros”. Overall it does a good enough job of explaining the character and world that it's understandable to a new reader. Additionally, it has enough character and world setting to really pull a new reader in.

Kind of dark, "urban fantasy". Good stuff.

I liked all of the stories. The one that I wasn't as engrossed with as the others was Kevin J. Anderson's zombie detective. Not that it was bad, but it is based more in humor than the other stories.

As always, I love a story about Dresden or his former apprentice Molly.

I was pleasantly surprised to see a story about Vicki Nelson by Tanya Huff. It has been a long time since I read the "Blood Ties" series or even watched the TV show based on the books but it was very easy and fun getting back into her story.

As for the other stories, all of them have me interested in looking into the other short stories and, hopefully, books that the authors have written.

A continuation of "Modern Midges" only filled with terresterial fly patterns.

This book is basically the same as "Modern Midges", only this book is filled with terrestrial patterns, of all kinds. Like the "Modern Midges", it is an excellent source for pattern reference (with recipes for each pattern) and it's filled with 100's of very nice high quality full color pattern pictures. Only reason I'm giving this book 3 stars is because step by step tying instructions for most of the patterns are NOT listed in this book. There are only a few step by steps for a hand full of the "basic patterns" that anybody with any tying experience could figure out how to do without the step by step instructions. Many of the patterns listed in this book are quite complex with many materials used in construction. Having step by steps for the more complex patterns would have been nice to include. In addition to that, there are some fishing techiniques on how to use a few of the patterns listed, but not a lot of history or places to use a specific pattern and why a specific pattern over another for/during certain conditions. These are some things that I think would make this book A LOT better. Although I will use this book in much the same way as I do "Modern Midges" (for pattern reference), as a pro fly tyer/fly fisherman, I would like to know more about the "why's" and "how's" of patterns, not necessarily just a bunch of pictures of fly patterns with recipes... The "how's and why's" as in, why use this material Vs. another similar material for fly construction and how did a pattern "come to be" (pattern history) on certain waters? Knowing things like that can make a difference both on the water and behind the vise and help you know which patterns to have with you when you go fishing... Especially if you're traveling to fish at an unfamiliar area. Like the "Modern Midges" book, this book could be so much more than it is, but, it has found it's niche in my library of tying books and it will be used mainly for pattern reference.
A book for beginners, this is not. I believe this book was intended for more experienced fly tyers and fly fishermen that mostly "know what they're doing" both behind the vise and on the water. If you're just starting out tying flies and looking for a book to help teach you how to do it with full step by step instructions, this is not it... There are many other books that are better suited for teaching and learning to tie flies and tying techniques (IMO). On the other hand, if you're looking for a book mainly consisting of a picture gallery of fly patterns (with their recipes) to use as a pattern reference guide, I haven't seen anything better than this book and also it's predecessor, "Modern Midges".

Excellent fly tying book

I have purchased Modern Terrestrials and it was worth every penny. It has an amazing amount of terrestrials with all the fly tying recipes and a excellent photos of each of the flies. The patterns that they have in this book are of ants, grasshoppers, crickets, moths, cicadas, bees, flies etc. The patterns displayed in this book have been tied by the most famous tiers in the world. Also the authors go over the technique of fishing the patterns and the set-up of the different rigs. The photography is excellent. I also have their Modern Midges and that is also excellent. If you like tying and want an excellent resource book, you can't beat these books.

Good comprehensive list of patterns

This book very thoroughly shows dozens and dozens fly patterns for hoppers, ants and crickets -- and other terrestrials. Some brief mention of tying techniques, and a sequence of tying photos for a handful of standard patterns is thrown in. So, if you are interested in a pictorial summary of the vast array of modern terrestrial patterns, this is it. There is very little text, with some sections on various fishing techniques and approaches. It is also a spiral-bound hardback. Overall, it's much like the midge book that the authors did a couple of years ago as far as format and approach (and like the midge book, while it claims to present the "world's best", it is very US/CO-centric). It could be vastly improved, as could the midge book, if more discussion of origin and details on each pattern were included - this is the kind of information/knowledge a buyer of these type of books would expect the authors to (know and) present.

Extended information of what is available in the book

The post adventure strategy guide is only as expansive as the content found in-game after beating it. As such, I'll just list a few things not mentioned in the description to help other potential customers decide if it's worth buying this guide.

The poster included is approximately 30in by 37in, or 58cm by 94cm
The guide explains the functions of Battle Maison
The guide lists all available Pokémon found in Friend Safari
The guide provides the areas where the roaming legendary birds can be found to force them into Sea Spirit's Den
The guide provides ranking information for the Battle Institute
The guide provides extensive information for the Looker sidequest.
The guide has outdated information on the breeding mechanics. (to be discussed below)
The guide provides the locations of the megastones
The guide explains how the Pokéradar works

This strategy guide has the same layout as the previous guide, with an introduction of the new location with a checklist of items and Pokémon obtainable in said area, followed by points of interests worth checking out. Just like the guide before it, it has a list of the egg groups readily available, so there's no need to refer to the previous guide for the information. The guide also gives information on how Pokémon breeding works but it's a tad outdated. The information that is outdated is still correct, but it does not explain that the mechanics have been simplified, making it far easier to breed a Pokémon with the desired traits.

The first half of the guide does its job in assisting the player find all the post-game content while providing tips where applicable.
The second half of the guide, which is the Pokédex, is as informative as it can be. The Pokédex provides an in-depth look at the Pokémon's level-up moves, TM&HM moves, egg moves, and tutor moves. It also provides information on where to find the Pokémon, the facilities you can use them in, and the damage taken in both regular battles and inverse battles. Superfluous information includes their evolution line and front/side/rear views of the Pokémon. The Pokédex guide also provides extensive information on alternate forms, such as the multiple patterns of Vivillon.

All in all, the guide provides the necessary information that you need in one handy location if you dislike browsing the internet for the information and does a great job with the Pokédex. However, it does have its downsides:

The guide only has the Pokédex information for the three Kalos regions. So you won't find information on Pokémon not native to Kalos, like Rattata and Entei.
The information to find items is not as extensive as guides found online.
The Pokédex does not use numerical values for the base stats and still use the bar system from previous guides.
It's paperback.

In Generation V, only the males can pass down moves, and only the females can pass down the Hidden Ability.
In Generation VI, both males and females can pass down moves and pass down the Hidden Ability. The female will pass down the Pokéball that it was caught in to its offspring. Example: a female Pancham caught it a Net Ball will always pass the Net Ball down to its offspring. Master Ball and Cherish Balls cannot be passed down.

Good informations.. But still lacking.

I've been a huge collector of Pokémon strategy guides because. I, myself is a huge fan and gamer. This guide really isn't that good. The pokedex layout and setup is missing some Pokémon and also doesn't provide the best ways to catch Pokémon. I'm not saying it isn't there, but it's tedious and small. Now let's get to the guide part. The post game guide itself doesn't really do justice. I feel spots are missing and this guide was hastily made just to make a few quick bucks.

Recommended for: Adding to your collection. There's really not much information that will help you. And another con it was made to be like a pocket book. So it's bulky and easy to lose your place. The last few guides for X and Y have been complete letdowns compared to the old strategy guides Pokémon has produced.

Incomplete, but thorough in what it does have

As other reviews have probably mentioned, this Pokedex doesn't have all the Pokemon in it, which is annoying considering that's why I bought it! At least the stuff it does have (post-game info, some of the Pokemon) seems complete. The font for the Pokemon information (like TMs, etc) that does exist is also in a really tiny font, and I'm not an old man!

Honestly, I'd just use websites like Serebii . net (look it up) to get any information needed and skip the guide. I'd like to buy a complete guide - unfortunately, this isn't it! I like having all the Pokemon in one book that I can reference!

P.S. the poster is cool. I'll probably keep it for that and the post game information.

Appears to cover the subject in detail, and was an excellent introduction to a neophyte such as myself. Good, clear and concise explanations and definitions that gave me complete access to the subject matter.
Some gripes, though:
My organization's library bought it for around $50, perhaps a couple of years ago, I believe. When I went to order my own copy (how's that for an endorsement!) I found it was now $140. For $140 I expect a superior book, and this is very good, but not superior - though no poor reflection on the authors.
The printing is extremely poor (is this from the budget department of John Wiley & Sons, Inc., Wiley-Interscience)? I think not - from the price. Yet the fonts, the layout, and even the antique cover design reminds one of something typeset and printed in the early 1950s, and the monochrome photographs are reproduced with atrocious quality--some are useless because they are so poor.
The text has many careless mistakes, mainly spelling mistakes, which really bug a detail-oriented person like myself. Did Wiley & Sons not appoint an editor for the book?
Finally, it deals mainly with temperate zones and I would have liked to have seen at least some information on tropical land stabilization, since my work is tropical and the needs here are extreme. Perhaps the principles are the same, and the temperate bias just represents the authors' experience.
In summary, Drs. Gray and Solir have produced a text to be proud of, but Wiley-Interscience have made a vastly inferior product out of it. That must be rather bitter-sweet for the authors.
PS: Does anyone know where I can get a copy for a reasonable price (under $50)?

About the Author

Mark Rippetoe is the author of Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training, Practical Programming for Strength Training, Strong Enough?, Mean Ol Mr. Gravity, and numerous journal, magazine and internet articles. He has worked in the fitness industry since 1978, and has been the owner of the Wichita Falls Athletic Club since 1984. He was in the first group certified by the National Strength and Conditioning Association as a CSCS in 1985, and the first to formally relinquish that credential in 2009. Rip was a competitive powerlifter for ten years, and has coached many lifters and athletes, and many thousands of people interested in improving their strength and performance. He conducts seminars on this method of barbell training around the country.

Andy Baker is the owner of Kingwood Strength and Conditioning in Kingwood, Texas. He has a degree in Sport and Health Science from American Military University. Andy attended Texas A&M University before joining the Marine Corps in 2003. He saw two combat deployments in Iraq before finishing his degree in 2007. Shortly afterward he opened KSC, a private training facility near Houston that offers barbell training to competitive athletes and the general public, as well as program consultation for competitive lifters. Andy is a competitive powerlifter. He lives in Kingwood with his wife Laura and two kids, and spends the tiny amount of spare time he has fishing and hunting.

The definitive book on programming

Both of Mark Rippetoe's major contributions to strength training literature are now in their third editions. Starting Strength: Basic Barbell Training - 3rd Edition has established itself as one of the premiere pieces of literature for anyone interested in getting stronger, and now the 3rd edition of Practical Programming has joined it.

The 2nd edition was full of wonderful information regarding the stress/recovery/adaptation cycle of strength training. Simply put, the more you do something (say, squat or deadlift), the better you become at it, and changes in programming (frequency, set/rep schemes, etc...) are required to further progress.

New to the 3rd edition is an impressive amount of detail on how to go about the necessary changes in programming as a lifter progresses.

The book contains its largest upgrade in chapters 6-8. With the assistance of Andy Baker of Kingswood Strength and Conditioning, programming for the novice, intermediate, and advanced lifters is covered in amazing detail.

For the novice, the basic principles of the Starting Strength method are discussed as well as a fabulous real world example of a properly executed linear progression. New to the 3rd edition is an extensive look at how to elongate and squeeze every drop of usefulness out of a linear progression. It details resets, stalls, and recovering from the mistake of increasing your lifts too quickly. All of these scenarios are backed up with biomechanical details of the human body. Additionally, new to the novice section is a detailed account of the "advanced novice" lifter as well as specialized diet and training tips for the particularly overweight or underweight trainee.

The Intermediate section has received the largest upgrade of all. While novice programming allows for progress from workout to workout, intermediate programming stretches out progress over a week to week basis. Though Rippetoe discussed his "Texas Method" style of programming in the 2nd edition, it prompted a lot of questions about variations and alternatives to the demanding programming. The details of the Texas Method are contained in 30+ pages of the most important, effective writing in strength programming literature. Broken into four phases, the amount of detail contained here is staggering, and should hopefully answer any questions and address all problems trainees may have with this very complex programming. Also included are "split routines" spread over four days, as well as a Heavy-Light-Medium system popularized by coaching great Bill Starr in the 1970's.

The advanced chapter delves into periodization, or the structuring of training schedules beyond a week to week basis. The book makes very clear that this programming is for ADVANCED lifters who's progress on a week to week basis has stalled out completely. At this point, a strength athlete will be at the point where they are ready to specialize in a certain realm of athletics. Specific training details for powerlifters, MMA athletes, and Olympic weightlifters are described in exhaustive detail. Most recreational lifters will never reach this level, but its inclusion here is extremely welcome.

The final chapter will prove extremely useful for current strength training coaches. It includes specific training details for females, youth, and an extensive section on older (35+ years) lifters.

Simply put, Practical Programming 3rd Edition is required reading for anyone who has a desire to achieve their maximum potential in the weight room. Buy it, read it, read it again, and get stronger!

All you will ever need

One of the many problems with the health and fitness industry is that there are many gurus and fads. I have literally wasted YEARS of my life following "5 weeks to (insert body specific goal)" programs from "Health" magazines and numerous other fitness fads. I have purchased many books on the subject. I have cycled, I have done Pilates, yoga. I tried running for over 3 months because all my runner friends told me that it becomes enjoyable, you just have to do it long enough. I have sought advice from local gym personal trainers. Finally after struggling to learn how to squat and getting nowhere with local "certified" trainers, an Internet search led me to the author and his book Starting Strength. Just wading into first few pages of that book I quickly realized that every other source of information about the subject of strength and how to attain it, that I have read, was complete garbage. Mr. Rippetoe presents such a simple, logical approach to strength in all of his writings that you feel like a fool for falling for all of the sophistry out there. His two books: Starting Strength and Practical Programming have changed my life. I do not say that lightly, before reading Mr. Rippetoe's books I could not squat at all, I had no appreciable strength and nothing really to show from years of "working out". Since then, I have squatted 400lbs, deadlifted 455 and standing pressed 175, and I plan on more! The thing is, before reading Mr. Rippetoe's books, I would have never even conceived that I could lift those numbers.

Like others have pointed out, this third edition of Practical Programming contains a significant amount of examples of the training methods. It really hammers home the idea that the programs aren't fixed and you can tailor them to your needs and sport.

If you want to really know what works, why, and how to do it, I strongly recommend you pick up both this book and Starting Strength third edition. You will not regret it.

Excellent Guide for the Over 60 Warriors

Finally, someone put together a weight lifting program that works for seniors! I had been using a three day a week program with 5 work sets for each of 4 exercises and 1 work set for the deadlift. As I increased weiights, after 3 months, I was constantly sore and becoming bone-tired and rundown. Finally, I injured my rotator cuff which set me back almost 2 months.
After receiving Mark's new book, I restarted using a two workout per week program witha light day for squats and back-off sets for the other exercises. I am making steady gaiins and am able to enjoy my normal life pain free. Thanks Mark, for giving us old war horses a sensible program for life. I'll be 70 in September 2014.
