A good guide for rageaholics

This book helped me better understand how my psyche works. I have intermittent explosive disorder and psychiatric wards have never explained to me how to deal with the tantrums the way this book has. It's far from a cure all, but it has helped me cope and learn why certain situations cause me the stress that they do. The book works in tandem with the breathing exercises that I do on a regular basis to prevent any meltdowns. If you got anger related impulse problems and have a few dollars then give this book a try. It helped me and it might help you too.

Good and some helpful suggestions, but was hoping for something with more focus on solid tools for ending rage, and for change. This book focuses more heavily on the types of rage and identifying what types the reader might have.

A great practical guide on anger with steps and methods to change to a happier future

Overall, a very helpful book for understanding anger and the original fears and experiences that could lead to anger.

The break out of rage into four main categories -- survival rage, impotence rage, abandonment rage, and shame rage -- was really useful for looking at the nuances of the different types. The example statements of people with that type of anger is very helpful in identifying your own anger. Understanding the different factors allows you to understand how they could combine together to form your unique cocktail of insecurities or fears.

The book also has some great practical advice and exercises to changing away from anger to changing your underlying beliefs and filters towards a more positive, safe, and loving message about people. It guides you to consider your life and people today so that you can leave your past hurts in the past. The author doesn't try to coax you into feeling like you should feel safe with everyone, or naively trust. He encourages you to accept the reality that the world is safe enough, even if that means you make your world safe first, and trust in your ability to find safe people.

I would only caution about the section about accepting impotence rage. I think the example for a situation on accepting impotence rage should have been something more permanent or unchangeable like a health problem rather than what appears to be a very toxic and destructive relationship. I spent a lot of time mentally arguing with the suggestions to accept that toxic situation, because I still believed there was more that could be done or should be done to protect the children as well as the example individual. For that particular example, the book misses its own point of having to be in an actually safe environment to not rage or misassesses that the husband is actually very dangerous and harmful, even if he isn't raging. If possible, I would encourage trying to work your own example of a truly unchangeable or permanent problem instead of accepting the book's example.

Fantastic Textbook to read in or out of school

This book was required reading for me but I enjoyed reading almost every single chapter. As a healthcare worker, it truly challenged the way I think and placed ethical issues in a perspective that allowed me to think for myself about all of them. There is a slight focus on the PPACA which I guess should be expected since that is one of the lastest issues our country is challenged with. The text covered many issues that we have been faced with throughout the last two to three decades in healthcare and I liked the fact that it discussed newer and more interesting issues first to keep you engaged.

I appreciated that it is kind of like an anthology in that most every chapter is a different author making each chapter feeling fresh. If you work in healthcare and serve patients, whether you are going to school or not, I recommend this book. It is certainly enlightening, educating, and challenging!

Chapter 1 was tough getting through but once you understand the theories, the remaining chapters get easier to understand. I have not read the entire book yet due to the start of the semester at school. I hope that the examples given throughout the text continues to drive the point home.

About the Author
Marcus Dods (11 April 1834 - 26 April 1909) was a Scottish divine and biblical scholar. He was a minister of the Free Church of Scotland (1843-1900). He was born at Belford, Northumberland, the youngest son of Rev. Marcus Dods, minister of the Scottish church of that town. He studied at Edinburgh Academy and Edinburgh University, graduating in 1854. Having studied theology for five years he was licensed in 1858, and in 1864 became minister of Renfield Free Church, Glasgow, where he worked for twenty-five years. In 1889 he was appointed professor of New Testament Exegesis in the New College, Edinburgh, of which he became principal on the death of Robert Rainy in 1907.

Absolutely beautiful!

I found this little book to be of such practical help as a supplement to my daily devotional reading and prayer time. It has many insights and observations based on four or five biblical stories that added so much to my understanding of God's love and how to better seek the presence of Christ in our daily lives. It appeared to be off-putting at first with its rather archaic wording, but as I read it, I found that to not be the case at all. It was very readable and still so timely today in its message. It is chock full of wonderful insights and reminders from a writer who had obviously spent a lifetime of reflection on scripture and on formulating ways to best share his reflections. A jewel of a book.

About the Author
Anita Johnston, Ph.D., is a clinical psychologist in private practice who specializes in women's issues and eating disorders. She co-founded the Anorexia and Bulimia Center of Hawaii in 1982 and lectures widely. Dr. Johnston lives with her husband and two daughters in Kailua, Hawaii.

This is a deeply insightful book that speaks to women with disordered eating of all types and severities. I've found that one of the most terrifying aspects of living with an eating disorder is the sense of stark isolation from others that we feel, fueled by the powerful secrets that we keep. As a woman recovered from bulimia, I was appreciative of Dr. Johnston's ability to help me see the many commonalities among women who suffer with eating disorders.
Johnston uses stories, myth and symbol to help explain the emotional and spiritual struggles that women encounter as they seek to regain a balance between heart and mind. Her description of the labyrinth as a metaphor of women's healing path serves as a gentle reminder that healing from disordered relationships with food is not a simple, straight-forward, linear process; and that being judgmental of our "progress" toward healing can only hinder our journeys.
I have read this book several times and have shared it with my mother, friends and colleagues. It has been a catalyst for many emotionally and intellectually fruitful discussions. I recommend it whole-heartedly.

This book lifted my spirits when I needed it most

I feel compelled to share with potential readers of Anita Johnston's EATING IN THE LIGHT OF THE MOON how much this book has helped me on my recovery from bulimia. As a woman with an eating disorder, let me assure that the path to recovery is a long difficult journey, but when things get tough, to this day, I turn to this book.
The concept is different than anything I have read to date, and I have read a lot. I love analysis, thought and literature. Johnston, who, by the way, runs an acclaimed eating disorder clinic in Hawaii uses multicultural fairy tales and myths to illustrate to the reader important steps on the journey to recovery. The story I return to again and again is that of the Tutu bird.
Briefly put, there was a young girl who lived in a village in Africa where the people were starving. Like all the other village children, she was sent out to fetch the animals that had been captured in the village traps overnight so that the villagers might eat. When she got there, there was a Tutu bird in the trap. His song was so sweet that she set him free. She returned to the village and explained what happened. The villagers were so angry that they buried her alive in a mud hut and left her to die. She cried and cried. One day, she heard a sweet song and a ray of light came though the top of her hut. The next day she heard the song again and realized that it was the Tutu bird. The bird was pecking a hole in the mud hut to free her! The bird then dropped in fruits and nuts. This continued until the girl was well fed and the Tutu bird could free her. She returned to an astonished village with the Tutu bird nourished compared to the thin villagers and then left with the Tutu bird to go into the forest forever. The point of the story: Find your voice, listen to it and don't stray. It will serve you in the end no matter how bleak things seem at the time.

Greek Gems and Finger Rings is not a book about jewelry, merely; it's about history, archeology, art, and the origins of Western civilization. John Boardman makes a great case for why anyone interested in the ancient Greeks, and particularly their fine arts, should take a careful look at their gems and finger rings. Many if not most of the "gems" and "rings" discussed (and pictured in exquisite detail in the book) are actually seals used by the ancient Greeks (and Minoans) for various purposes: to seal and mark private personal correspondence and documents of state, to seal and identify containers and their goods in commerce. They were also used as heraldry. And yes, sometimes they were just jewelry. In Bronze Age Greece, these seals went from crude glyphs to gorgeous works of art in ivory, gold, precious stones. Some depict religious rituals and gods, scenes from mythology. Or they can depict hunting scenes with people and animals. Boardman takes you chronologically from Minoan/Mycenean to Archaic, Classical, and Hellenistic. He places the gems in cultural and historical context. He obviously has extensive knowledge of the prior literature on the subject, especially the archeological record and matters of provenance. Many of the gems in this book are artistic masterpieces to rival those of any Greek art. Boardman makes a case for them as miniature sculpture. To me they are more interesting than early Greek vase painting, which appears more frequently in books about ancient Greece than these seals, which are rarely shown. What particularly fascinated me was the clear differences in techniques, tastes, and styles from period to period. Comparing, say, the early Minoan and Mycenean seals to those of the Classical period yields some continuities, of course, but also much that is different, even in the way they portray the human (and also non-human) body. For example, the Minoans depicted people as wasp-waisted, with arm and leg joints very tapered, a total contrast to the Classical depictions, which are more realistic even within their idealizations. The Minoan bodies look more flexible, and their style captures a vibrant sense of animation, movement, life. The Classical gems are beautiful, but I found the Minoan gems more interesting. They are certainly more ecstatically alive. I might wonder to what extent the classical Greeks really believed in their gods, but in the case of the Minoan seals I must say they really convey a sense of pagan worship, showing rituals involving bare-chested women holding serpents, little gods materializing above altars. The Minoans and Myceneans are farther back in time than the Classical Greeks, and their art conveys that primordiality, a spirit and attitude towards existence that appear strange to us today as compared with the seals created in subsequent periods. We recognize the classical; its influence is all around us. But the Minoans seem alien, even in the way they dress. The book itself is large, sumptuous, and brimming with over a thousand detailed impressions and photographs. Well worth the price.

Bargain Price on a Beautiful Book

Boardman's book is great for looking at Bronze Age, early and classical Greek Gems, but only spends a few pages on Hellenistic Gems and lumps them together with Roman, which was a bit disappointing. Other than that, a beautiful book, almost a complete corpus of gems from the noted period. Very useful.

Book Review of " How to Report Statistics in Medicine"
The book " How to Report Statistics in Medicine" is written by Tom Lang and Michelle Secic in 1997, published by the American College of Physicians (ACP). Just as Edward J. Huth wrote in his foreword, " ........... physician who knows nothing about statistical methods expect to find in reports of clinical trials of drugs statistical evidence ................." "Unfortunately, what passed before our eyes as statistical analysis and reporting does not always represent the proper use of statistical methods or the clear and adequate reporting of statistical findings..., and the review system is not always infallible in judging statistical evidence and how it is presented." "Up until now, authors have had available little published guidance in how to report most effectively their statistical data." Under all this circumstances, the book came into being, aiming to bring valuable specific and detailed help to authors who wish to make their papers as statistically convincing as possible. In fact, this book is also written for medical writers and editors, authors reporting basic or clinical research, clinicians, residents, and students in all areas of medicine and health science, including nursing and allied health professionals. The first author of the book, Tom Lang, is Manager of Medical Editing Services at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where he supervises the editing of scientific manuscripts for publication in peer-reviewed journals. The second author of the book, Michelle Secic, is the Senior Biostatistician in the Department of Biostatistics and Epidemiology at The Cleveland Clinic Foundation, where she assists researchers in designing, analyzing, and interpreting medical research studies.
Here are some of the strengths and weakness of the book:
1. There are basically 4 major parts in the book: annotated guidelines to for reporting statistical information, guide to statistical terms and tests, an uninitiated, reference list of the guidelines, and 4 useful appendices. The guidelines are presented in very clear and easy-to -find way, marked by different signs and type fonts in alphabetical order. To me, part two is especially useful. Every time I do not know the exact meaning of a specific term in statistics, I can go directly to this part and look at the explanation and get a better idea. For example, the term "intention-to-treat analysis" is right there on page 262.
2. In part 4 of the book, the appendix on " Rules for Presenting Numbers in Text" provides useful information, since numbers are most commonly used in reporting results.
3. Part 1 is the key part of the book, which contains many specific topics on reporting statistics. For example, after looking through Section 6 of Part 1, "Testing for Relationships: Reporting Associations and Correlation Analysis", I know the function of correlation matrix and how to interpret different correlation values, and then check whether the author has come to a positive conclusion or not. The same is true of the knowledge about 95% CI, with which I may help medical researchers come to a more convincing conclusion.
4. This book is very carefully proofread and so far I have not found any typing error.
5. One weakness of the book is, I think, that it would probably be better for the book to come up with some exercises or a separate workbook, providing any one who wants to learn from this book some chances of practice. Here what I mean by exercise is not how to calculate a specific statistical value, and I am referring to the exercises that help readers to think of the correct report of statistics and to what extent they
6. Another minor limitation of the book is that it is too heavy to take as a portable reference book. If it was printed on thinner paper, I would like it even better.

Understanding biostatistics without becoming a statistican

As a medical writer and editor at The Cleveland Clinic, Thomas A. Lang found that the lack of clear understanding of statistics by non-statisticians affected the clarity of their writing. Physicians had the same problem while writing up their research papers for publication. Lang perceived a need among medical and science writers to understand just enough of biostatistics to make them better writers and editors without becoming statisticians themselves. He devised workshops that were conducted by the American Medical Writers Association which were enormously successful. The logical next step was to write this book based on the valuable teaching experience and feedback he got at those courses. In other words, this is a book that wasn't written in a vacuum but is the result of a perceived need, and the author's experience in meeting that need. Co-author Michelle Secic has also contributed with her expertise, making it a valuable book for people in this field.

guess who's got a new shovel, then?

for those of you who are familiar with the bbc series, "ripping yarns," "more ripping yarns," and "even more ripping yarns," nine shows produced from 1976 to 1979, this book is a complete text collection of all the shows. the book reads like a script. you may think this would be off-putting, but it is not. on the contrary, the book contains so much extra material which is not in the show videos, it is almost like seeing new shows. this is michael palin and terry jones at their very, very best. there are moments in the book when you will just laugh out loud in amazement at how witty and creative these guys can be. "ripping yarns" was created post python, and the humor here is, well, just a bit mellowed, more refined, subtle, and yet effortless. in my dumb opinion, I like these shows (gasp!) better than monty python. if you buy this book, you will laugh! all of the stage directions are in this book (not in the videos), and these printed extras are just as funny as the dialogue. there are moments in ripping yarns that are comic genius. having repeatedly watched the "ripping yarns" videos, I can tell you, the book is funnier. the complete text of all nine yarns! as the book's back cover says: "the book is ideal reading after 'lights out' in the colonies."
