Dr. Ng earned his Ph.D in electrical engineering from Columbia University. Since 1980, he's been a technical manager with Agere Systems (formerly Bell Labs), in Murray Hill, N.J. (The book is published by Wiley Interscience [wiley.com], and is available wherever books of this ilk are sold).
The author is no slouch when it comes to technical publishing either. He's been editor of IEEE Electron Device Letters and is a liaison ot the IEEE Press, so it's a pretty good bet he knows what he's talking about.
Now, I don't know Dr. Ng personally, nor do I get any money for mentioning this book or any other. (I did get the book free to review, though!)

The book should not be considered a listing of current major semiconductor devices currently for sale. Instead, it describes the theory behind the major types of devices - like a floating gate MOSFET, LED, injection laser, phototransistor, MIM diode.

Also, it explains quantum tunnelling - Fowler-Nordheim and the use of the Wentzel-Kramers-Brillouin approximation for the transmission coefficient. Tunnelling is used in various devices, and the understanding given here will be perfectly adequate for many researchers.

Only about 2 years of undergraduate physics is needed as preparation for the book. Plus some electrical engineering.

The text should be compared to the classic Sze tome, Physics of Semiconductor Devices.

Don't buy this book!

Princeton Review obviously hasn't done their homework regarding the new AP Biology curriculum. It still reflects the old AP test format and completely omits entire sections. There is WAY to much emphasis on ecology and not enough on cells. Cell signaling and transduction is heavily emphasized in the new curriculum and this book doesn't even mention it!

I was looking forward to previewing this book and encouraging my AP Biology students to buy it. I will certainly not be recommending this.

Useful as a general biology review, but not for the AP test.

The 2013 edition of this book doesn't at all reflect the changes that have been made to the AP Biology test. This book is almost identical to my 2010 edition of the same book. That means that this book includes a great deal of information that is no longer covered on the AP test, and lacks a great deal of information that is.

For example, the new AP Biology course description states, "Memorization of the names of the phases of mitosis is beyond the scope of the course and the AP Exam." This book teaches you to memorize the phases of mitosis. What it doesn't teach you, though, is that "Cyclins and cyclin-dependent kinases control the cell cycle," which the College Board requires students to know for the AP test.

The "Big Ideas" that are stressed in the AP Biology course and exam description are completely absent from this book. Instead, this book stresses the themes of the old AP test. Also lacking are any tips for how to succeed in the new free-response section of the test. Instead, it prepares you for the old free-response section that no longer exists.

But if you are a college student or general biology teacher looking for a good biology overview, this book is actually quite good. Just don't use it to prepare for the AP test.

Is not updated for the Four Big Ideas

I have been teaching AP biology for four years and was looking forward to this book being released in the hopes that it would be a good review book for the changes that collegeboard has made to the AP Biology test. It is just like all previous review books with no mention of the four big ideas or any other changes to AP bio. I originally bought the book so I would have more conceptual based questions to show my students and was severly disappointed with this book. It even states that there are four essays with equal amounts of time (when in reality, the new test will have two longer questions and a few short answer). Anyway, don't waste your money if you're hoping for an up-to-date book. Just buy a used one. I will be returning this one tomorrow :(

Boring literature

I expected a lot of this book because I've read better works from Redfern, but this one is a collection of different and not updated pieces of information, that really bring nothing essentially new. There are not secrets exposed beyond getting to know some secret places used for processing data by the British intelligence.

readable literary criticism of Donaldson

Keep in mind, contrary to most of the reviews below, this is NOT a novel by Stephen Donaldson. It's a scholarly book written by a PhD ABOUT Donaldson's Thomas Covenant trilogies. If you're looking for the actual books, don't get this one. As for this book, Variations on the Fantasy Tradition, it's readable, if somewhat over written and in places awkward--a common failing of academic writing. It examines Donaldson's Covenant books (mainly the First Chronicles) in light of general trends and tendencies in fantasy. As such, it's often a compare-contrast operation: this is what a fantasy hero is usually like; this is how Thomas Covenant is similar and different from the standard fantasy hero. It covers in its chapters the hero and how Covenant is something of an inversion of the typical hero; comparisons to Tolkien; myth and how it is used in the Covenant books; the significance/importance of knowledge in the books and how it is gained; the narrative structure; and how life and death are viewed and what meanings they are given in the text. It also does a general coverage of the Second Chronicles. Some "trivia" are gotten wrong or misstated, so that could have been tightened up, though that in itself doesn't affect any of the main points made. The scholarship isn't ground-breaking and it's fairly straightforward, but interesting to me as someone who liked the Covenant books and has taken English courses. The interviews with Donaldson are interesting, though I wouldn't buy it only for them ....If you liked thinking about the themes and ideas in the Covenant books, you may like this, though more of it is devoted to form and structure and than the meanings/reasons behind them (i.e. how Covenant differs from typical heros as opposed to _why_ make him not like other heros). But, then, that's not really why this book was written. It's aim is to locate Donaldson in the literary canon of fantasy. So in that sense, it does all right. Say, three and a half stars.

Excellent review of Donaldson's work

As a fan of Donaldson's Covenant series, I was delighted to see that there was a scholarly work of literary criticism covering the Chronicles. There have been so many written about The Lord of the Rings (deservedly so) but none regarding Covenant. I felt this was a mistake, as Donaldson's works, while certainly not equal to Tolkien's, bear significant literary merit.

One of the things I found most interesting was the shared vocabulary between Senior and Donaldson. Any reader of Donaldson knows that he enjoys employing archaic words. Senior even levies this as somewhat of a criticism. However, *he uses some of the same words*. I couldn't help but chuckle. To argue for clarity, and then go against your own argument is, well, silly.

But that's the worst I can say about the book. Other than works on literary criticism regarding Tolkien, this was one of the very few that I read from cover to cover. He didn't miss many points (although as others have pointed out there were some factual innaccuries; these were minor, though).

An Ideal Resource

As a student of fine and decorative art, "A World History of Art" has proved an invaluable resource for me. Unlike so many texts intended to provide a comprehensive overview of the history of art, this book is fresh and enjoyable, offering a wealth of information in a succinct and articulate manner. It is all too easy to deteriorate into ponderous, heavy prose when discussing the history of art, but Honour and Fleming generally manage to avoid the trap and move steadily and seamlessly through both time and place in discussing the progression of art.

"A World History of Art" is, primarily, an academic text and is therefore a proverbial doorstop of a book - I would not recommend it as a coffee table adornment, but would strongly encourage students or connoisseurs to consider it as a reference. It is an ideal source of general information for the university or postgraduate student, and would serve as an excellent introduction for anyone seeking to study the history of art.

The best art history text book there is

Well there might be a better one, but this is orders of magnitude better than anything else I have read, including Gombrich. The great thing about it is that it attempts to relate the form and content of the art to the worldview of the artists and the society of the time that the art was produced. In support of its arguments it gives lots of extended passages from contemporary writers as well as many, many quotations from the artists themselves. The philosophical and theological connections are well explained.
What it doesn't do is attempt to re-interpret things as seen through an atheist/materialist worldview, (which assumes that any worldview based upon faith is founded in error and assumes that it cannot be a true motivation for the artist does). This is what nearly every other art book does. For example, much of Western art history is linked to Catholic beliefs. Honour and Fleming do not question the truth of Catholic beliefs, as nearly every art book I have come across does, but seeks to explain how, given these beliefs, their art might be as it is. So they explain clearly and accurately what those beliefs are then relate what we see to them. I find their analysis very convincing. They have the same approach to art of non-Christian cultures as well.
The only section that I find weak is that not written by Honour and Fleming, on the art of the 20th century. The writers seem are not able to articulate the worldview behind it in the same clear way.

A very fun read, but missing a little something.

While still thoroughly enjoyable, I felt that this book was perhaps not as good as the previous books in the series. While I was reading, I kept feeling that something was missing, that little spark that was in all the other books before this. The main characters seemed to be sort of empty, I didn't make as much of a connection with them this time around. This is definitely more serious than the others, I can tell that Goldberg probably wrote the majority of this one, and while I love Goldberg's work, my love for the Monk novels and that writing style is a huge part of what drew me to this series in the first place, it just felt like it was missing some trademark Evanovich-ness. There wasn't a whole lot of funnier moments that made me LOL. It didn't really have the same feel of the rest of the series until the second half. Some of the best parts come from the returning supporting characters, almost all of them were there this time around, and I just can't get enough of them. I loved the ending, no cliffhanger this time. I did still enjoy this installment of the series, and I recommend picking this up if you like the series, though you really have to read the other books to get the full grasp of what's going on. I love this series and I really hope that we'll get more books in the future, I am very much looking forward to those.

Enjoyed the story, worth reading.....

This story is different from the previous plots in the series because it is personal this time. Nick has been taken and is being used for the gain of a madman! Kate has to get him back at all costs. In addition to the usual cast some previously introduced characters from previous books were brought back into this scheme and given tidy endings. It was nicely done and now that I have read all the books I appreciated it. This story was full of twists and turns as usual, the comedy was spot on and the relationship between Kate and Nick has gone to a new level.

It has all the right action, suspense, and humor that a girl can ask for. What I was not happy about comes down to the editing. In every book all the main characters receive a small introduction for those who this book may be their first time reading this series but this time Kate’s dad Jake was introduced twice. Also, there was a portion towards the end where Kate’s name was in place of the female bad gal. This book felt for the first time that two different authors wrote it and it was edited in such a manner that it was obvious.

What a let down. I did enjoy the story and it is worth reading! I just could not believe how poorly it was put together. I am hoping that they will correct the editing snafu’s and maybe republish a second edition. For your reference I read the hardcopy isbn#978-0-553-39277-7. I did rate the story four stars because I truly did enjoy the story. I left off one star because for me I missed some of the quirkiness and tongue-in-cheek that I was used to in the other stories so I felt it was a wee bit lacking. The editing issues complaint is for those of you who will read it, so that you know before hand.

Fox & O'Hare do not disappoint

The Pursuit is the 5th book of con man Nick Fox & FBI agent Kate O'Hare series.  In this book, they work on preventing a terrorist attack in the U.S.

This book picks up immediately after the 4th book, The Scam.  

The supporting characters return.  What I've enjoyed about this series is the back and forth dialog and innuendo between Fox and O'Hare.  There are many funny moments between the characters, just like in the previous books.  

What I like about this book and the series is the fast moving pace, makes hard to put down this book.  I also enjoy when they off in a foreign location where we are given specific details about certain historical landmarks in those foreign cities.  Makes you feel like we are actually there.

This is my favorite series and I'm really looking forward to the next book.  

I definitely recommend this book to those who enjoy mystery/thriller books.  To those who've enjoyed the previous books in this series will not be disappointed.

Goes Direct to the Point!

Professor Werner Platzer was teaching Anatomy for a very long time using same sentences and same boring jokes in his class every year! Regardless of his outdated style, Prof. Platzer does a great job in explaining what you need to know as a part of the Anatomy course in med school. If you have some undergrad background, you can easily use this book in med school. However, it might be a little to compact if you have not taken some upper division courses in your undergrad. In addition, this book is not clinically oriented and perhaps not a good choice for the steps!
